Bethmale and Ayes: two ponds, two atmospheres

A circular route that allows you to discover a low-altitude pond nestled in the middle of the forest, then a mountain pond in the heart of the mountain pastures, passing by the Campuls hut, and to meet the herds in summer.

Description of the walk

Leave your car at the Col de la Core on the D17, between Sentenac-d'Oust and Arrien-en-Bethmale.

(S/E) Take theGR®®10towards Étang de Bethmale. The path winds down through the forest and approaches the road.

(1) The trail becomes flatter. Follow the contour lines, keeping the road below you for a while, still in the forest. Arrive at Étang de Bethmale.

(2) At a fishermen's hut, turn right, heading north, so as to walk along the lake. Leave a path that cuts the lake in two on your left. Further on, you will reach the end of the lake.

(3) Turn left onto a track that leads to a car park. At the end of the car park, turn left onto a path that approaches the lake and then follows it a little higher up. The path continues to climb and moves away from the lake. You will then reach a fork.

(4) Turn right onto theGR®®10, which winds its way up to a track.

(5) Follow it to the right. A little further on, leave the track and follow theGR®® which turns left. The path comes out of the woods and leads to an alpine pasture below a hut.

(6) Continue on theGR®® which climbs in a hairpin bend and turns back just behind the hut. Shortly afterwards, you will come out onto a track.

(7) Leave theGR®® which goes straight ahead and take the track on the right. Pass close to a small car park, then another larger car park. Continue along this track to the Cabane de Campuls.

(8) Leave the track that turns right and continue straight ahead on a wide grassy path. Shortly afterwards, this path gives way to a small, unmarked trail that resembles a dry stream bed and climbs steeply with very short switchbacks. You will come to a fork with a wooden sign (no inscription).

(9) Turn right, continuing to climb but less steeply, to reach theGR®®10which follows the ridge.

(10) Follow theGR®® to the right for a round trip to the Étang d'Ayes.

(11) Then turn back onto theGR®®, staying on the ridge until you reach the Col d'Auèdole, where theGR®®10and 10D meet.

(12) Leave the path that leads to the hut below and turn right onto theGR®®10D.

(13) Immediately afterwards, at a three-way junction, turn left and continue on theGR®®10D. The path, which is quite challenging, descends to the Col de la Core (S/E).

The instructions before point 1 are unclear. As another comment mentioned, I had to rejoin the road to find the GR trail. Hike completed in 5.5 hours

A very interesting hike with two magnificent lakes and the Campuls cirque, completed with three dogs
Three-quarters of the hike was in very pleasant shade!
Hike completed in 5½ hours
Lost the route on the first descent, so I had to go back to the road and rejoin the GR10 afterwards
For me, this was a difficult hike, not a moderate one (1,300 m elevation gain)
The most dangerous part was the descents after Lake Ayes, which were rocky and steep
Watch out for the summer pastures! The cows don't like dogs very much! Try to avoid them as much as possible

A very beautiful solo hike, the magnificent Cirque de Campuls (waterfall swollen by recent rains) and the sparkling Ayes pond under the ice (1.5 cm of ice 50 cm from the edge).
Today it wasn't very cold (no hat, gloves or fleece). The weather was fine, but unfortunately I didn't see a single ray of sunshine during the whole hike. The sky clouded over at the end of the hike. There is a little snow on the trails with some parts more or less frozen (be careful).
Coming from Castillon en Couserans, I started the hike at Lake Bethmale and had some difficulty finding the right path at the start and the descent from the Col de la Core to Lake Bethmale (no signposts).
I met two hikers

This is a magnificent hike. There are beautiful landscapes all along the way. The only downside is that it was very busy when I did it this weekend, spending a night in a bivouac. It was very beautiful and warm, even though it's now October...
I highly recommend it.

Amazing hike!! We took our time during the hike so we could camp at Lake Ayes. The view was splendid, and we even got to go swimming. The elevation gain was very manageable, even though we were two beginners (it got a little more challenging towards the end, but nothing too difficult). I highly recommend it!

Superb hike, the landscapes are fabulous, especially the Ayes pond....
Bethmale Lake was quite busy, with fishermen and families picnicking...
The route took 5 hours to complete

A very pleasant, beautiful and varied hike.
Unfortunately, it was quite cloudy on Monday, 15 June 2020, but there were some nice sunny spells, mild temperatures and no rain.

Unique feature: you descend at the start of the hike Then there's a beautiful forest crossing to the superb Bethmale pond, followed by another forest climb, which is very nice.
A short stretch on a forest track, which wasn't unpleasant, then we came out of the trees and had a nice climb up to the Ayes pond, which was very pleasant.
Not many people this time, but it must be a bit different during holidays/weekends/sunny days.

On the way back down, we added a short visit to the Eychelle pond, not far away.
The return trip was quite steep at the beginning, but nothing too bad, and the view was as beautiful as ever.

It must be wonderful in summer with all the raspberry bushes along the way!

Thank you for this route.

Starting from the pass, there is a contour line with a significant cumulative elevation gain. This is particularly important to bear in mind for the return journey, which is consequently very long.

Beautiful hike, but done on a Sunday in August... bad idea: Ayes pond was far too crowded (because it can be accessed via a shorter, easier path from a car park)... a shame.

Super hike, between high mountains and countryside. Be careful, in mid-April there is still quite a bit of snow at the Ayes pond, the last kilometre was difficult.

Just for your information: GR10 downhill from the Mont Noir car park to Lake Bethmale, easy up to 5, significantly steeper from 5 to 4 with a narrow trail (sometimes only one foot wide) hidden under leaves (normal at this time of year).
Not recommended for those who are prone to vertigo. Beautiful arrival at the lake.

A very beautiful hike with varied landscapes, one of my favourites among those I have done in the region. I particularly enjoyed the beginning up to the Ayes pond.

The end of the hike is in the woods, which is nice when it's hot at the end of the day. Bethmal Lake is accessible by road and is quite busy. I had some difficulty finding my way back from Bethmal Pond. The path is behind the wooden hut by the water's edge.
