Cuxac Cabardès - The heights of Saint-Pierre

A mid-season hike as it’s always exposed to the sun and wind. It climbs for 3.5 km before heading back down… obviously!

Description of the walk

Access: Heading up from Carcassonne to Mazamet on the D118, pass the village of Cuxac-Cabardès and take the first road on the right. Park in the car park at the Chapelle Saint-Pierre, which is a large junction where several roads meet. There are plenty of parking spaces there.

(S/E) Start the walk by heading up to the right of the chapel and join a wide track.

(1) After about 300m, leave this track and take a detour along the path marked “La Source”. Walk past the spring and go round it to return to the main track on the right.

(2) Follow this path uphill until you come out into a large field on your left. Follow the right-hand edge of the field and, at the next Fork in the road, keep left. Turn right into the grassy area alongside a small enclosure until you reach another wide path (if you continue straight on, you’ll still find the next path!). Take this path to the right for 50m.

(3) At the junction with a small sign reading “Entre sources et lauzes”, take the path on the left and continue climbing through scrub (not tall enough to shelter you from the sun). You’ll reach a large crossroads.

(4) Continue along the path on the left and you’ll reach a wood of very tall conifers. Pass the second yellow sign on your left and keep going straight on. You’ll come to another main path that forms a point with yours.

(5) Take the hairpin bend on this new track, running parallel to the one you have just left. From here, you will be going downhill all the way. You will reach a large crossroads with four major tracks.

(6) Be careful: take the right-hand track, then almost immediately turn right again onto a path that runs alongside barbed wire. Follow this slightly uneven path to the next junction, which you passed earlier.

(4) Continue along the left-hand lane to reach an even wider road.

(7) Turn right onto this road. Follow it to the crossroads where there is a small sign saying “Entre sources et lauzes”.

(3) Take the left-hand track, which will once again run alongside the large field you passed earlier and rejoin the track you took on the way up. Continue until you reach the three-way junction.

(2) Continue to the left and head towards the Chapelle Saint-Pierre and the car park (S/E).

Notes

Don’t forget to drink – it’s a long climb!

Worth a visit

Behind the chapel is a residential house. The owner has the key to the chapel if you’re an architecture enthusiast. A little further up, ‘La source’ is now nothing more than a waterhole. Apparently, it was said to be effective against eye diseases. I think nowadays it would probably cause more problems than it solves. But the structure covering it is a fine example of the dry-stone constructions so common in the region.

A walk well worth doing for the magnificent views all along the route; on a clear day, you can see the Pyrenees. Don’t forget your cap or hat if it’s sunny, as there’s very little shade, and make sure you take a bottle of water. The route is a bit of a let-down once you reach the turning point; I would have liked to have carried on walking through the lovely woodland.
Best avoided in hot weather and during the hunting season.

A memory of that hike I did about a month ago in sweltering heat.
On the plus side:
lots of nature, varied and very rural scenery,

On the downside
A road section towards the end, a few patches of tall grass that were difficult to get through; at one point the route changed and I had to backtrack about 500 metres (so keep a close eye on the route on your smartphone)

Hello,

We were: just before we came out into the big field; and we heard gunshots and saw some orange vests; so we decided to go back to the car.
It’s only a matter of time.

What interested me was the route to the St Pierre spring, and it certainly lived up to expectations.
Thank you

Hello, it’s a lovely climb – watch out for the hunters; we’re passing right by their hunting grounds. What a shame, Michel.
