Description of the walk

Starting point in Vétheuil, Place du Cimetière. A few free parking spaces. As the car park is quite small, you can also park for free a little further down Rue Claude Monet.

(S/E) From Vétheuil church, follow Rue du Cimetière then turn left onto Chemin de Chérence. There is an uphill climb for about 800 m. You’ll reach the heights, near the Mantes Chérence airfield.

(1) Walk alongside it. You can watch gliders taking off. Continue straight on until you reach a house next to the Route des Crêtes.

(2) Turn left to continue along the footpath. There is then a descent of a few hundred metres. Be careful at the bottom of the descent, as there are several paths.

(3) Follow the red and white marked path. There are then no further junctions until the next viewpoint.

(4) Once you reach the first viewpoint overlooking the Seine, you’ll be able to take some magnificent photos.
You can veer slightly off the hiking trail to climb a little higher and enjoy a panoramic view from Vétheuil to La Roche-Guyon.

(5) Then rejoin the hiking trail to continue on to La Roche-Guyon. A few hundred metres further on, there is a second viewpoint overlooking the Seine. Once you reach the next viewpoint, you will have a view of the Château de La Roche-Guyon.

(6) Then head down into the town centre of La Roche-Guyon. You can visit the kitchen garden and orchard opposite the château.

(7) Turn back and follow the same route you took on the way there to return to the starting point (S/E).

The route was very well signposted, with pleasant woodland on this sunny September day. I only did the outward journey
, starting from Mantes-la-Jolie station to Vétheuil via the GR2, then after La Roche-Guyon, continuing along the GR2 to Sainte-Geneviève-les-Gasny, where I was able to take a bus from the Vernon urban network back to the SNCF station, a hike of 28 km.

A very beautiful hike, which we have already done in the other direction. It is truly wonderful to approach Château de la Roche step by step
For lunch at La Roche Guyon, avoid the crêperie, which is very unpleasant. We gave up on it!

The route starting from Vétheuil is pleasant and varied. The village of La Roche-Guyon is well worth a few hours’ visit, particularly the château… even if the restaurants are touristy and of poor quality.
It’s a shame that the return route follows the same path (a massive climb to reach the GR2 from the village of La Roche Guyon).
We tried returning via the path along the Seine, but it wasn’t really ideal as most of the time you have to walk alongside a very busy road (lots of motorbikes and poor verges). There isn’t really a towpath.

Hello,
regarding the first viewpoint at point no. 4, please do not stray from the path and do not walk up the slope, as indicated. This is in fact an area of limestone grassland restored by the nature reserve, home to many protected species that are highly sensitive to trampling. This area is, moreover, increasingly affected by erosion caused by foot traffic. Many species of interest, both flora and fauna, are particularly abundant across all the grassy and rocky areas. Throughout the nature reserve, please remember to stay on the paths and follow the rules to preserve these natural treasures that enhance your walks so much. Thank you.
