The Combes du Sautadou and Recaute from the Forêt des Cèdres

This walk begins in the undergrowth and involves an almost continuous descent to the Combe du Sautadou, offering a beautiful mix of valley-floor vegetation typical of the Vaucluse heath. You may spot short-toed eagles flying overhead, as they nest on the heights of the Petit Luberon in summer. The cedars are encountered towards the end of the route.

Description of the walk

(S/E) With your back to the Massif des Cèdres car park (end of the road), the route heads into the woodland, passing to the right of the mast at the entrance to the car park. Turn right twice and follow the path to the first Fork in the road.

(1) Continue to the left until you reach another Fork in the road.

(2) At the third fork in the road, continue along the grassy path to the left.

(3) Turn left and leave the faint path that continues straight ahead. Further on, ignore a path and a track that branch off to the right. You’ll come to a cross-country track.

(4) Turn right, heading due south, and reach the Combe du Sautadou.

(5) Climb up the GRP® path on the right towards the Combe de Recaute.

(6) You’ll reach a path that may offer better views than the route described.

(7) Follow the DFCI track to the right and leave it further on, near a cistern, to take a path branching off to the right into the Vallon du Gros Ubac. Further on, rejoin the DFCI track to the Aire des Bosses, where there is a lovely view over the ridges of the Forêt des Cèdres.

(8) Turn right and take the wide, rocky path which climbs to the top of the rocky ridge as far as Portalas and the viewpoint over the Durance Valley.

(9) Head off to the right, due north, and make your way to the Forêt des Cèdres and the Petit Luberon ridge path.

(10) Cross the wide main track and turn right, following the nature trail which explains various aspects of the Forêt des Cèdres (origin, fauna, flora, use of the wood, etc.). This will take you back to the car park (S/E).
