Description of the walk

This route starts from the Maison des Cascades car park. It can leave from 2 other locations (see Practical Information).

(S/E) Head towards the Maison des Cascades. Turn right onto the path that runs alongside the stream.

(1) The first and most imposing waterfall is actually a series of jumps. Continue up the steps and footbridges.

(2) After reaching the top of this first waterfall, continue along the perfectly marked path that follows the Hérisson.

(3) At the top of the stairs, turn right and follow the Saut de la Forge sign.

(4) At this crossroads, turn left at the restaurant and continue as far as Moulin Jeunet. Go past it and, at the next crossroads, turn left onto the footbridge.

(5) Cross the stream on the footbridge, climb the path that ends near a group of chalets and turn right onto the road to the hamlet of La Fromagerie.

(6) Keep to the right, passing between 2 shops and statues carved from tree trunks. Continue on the GR®559A.

(7) Turn right, cross the Hérisson and turn right again to reach Saut Girard. Continue along the stream.

(5) Continue straight on, leaving the footbridge on your right that you took earlier.

(4) Continue, bending slightly to the right.

(3) At the Château Garnier crossroads, turn right and cross the Hérisson. The path is on the right shortly after the crossing and slopes gently upwards.

(8) A few metres before the road, turn left and follow the only marked path with a few yellow markers.

(9) Rejoin the D39 without crossing it. Turn left up the steps to the Belvédère de l'Éventail. When you reach the lookout (with a bird's-eye view of the Éventail and the valley), turn around and take the first path on the left (do not go up the stairs). Continue along this path, which runs almost parallel to the road.

(10) When you reach the road, cross it to take the fairly wide path opposite. Continue until you enter the village of Ménétrux-en-Joux. Go around the chapel to the right, onto the main road.

(11) Cross this road, leaving Rue des Rochettes on your right. Turn right into Rue des Cascades (parallel to the road). Before the last building, turn right, then left at the next crossroads.
Continue along this path (GR®559), allowing you to breathe in the shadows of the forest.
When you arrive at the Maison des Cascades, depending on the season, you may need to adjust the car park to find your vehicle (S/E).

Practical information

Even though it's a very popular and well-publicised route, it's essential that you do it with good footwear!
This walk can have several starting points.
The one described here starts from the main car park. A charge is made during the season (€5 in 2016). This contribution enables the development and upkeep of this Classified Natural Site and access to the exhibition rooms and the documentary film.
There are two other possible departures:

  • From the hamlet of La Fromagerie (6), in which case take the description from this WPT.
  • From the Bonlieu-Saut de la Forge car park (4), in which case follow the description in this WPT.

In all cases, the section between (3) and (5) is an out-and-back.

Don't hesitate to take the side paths on the way up to the waterfalls and back; they lead to viewpoints.

The height difference calculated is not correct, as the calculation method for gorges such as these is not suitable. It is approximately 300m positive.

This route can be shortened:
At (3), turn left and continue along (8). Length 7.9km.

In the event of an accident, call 112.

Note: I strongly advise you to take this route (wherever you start from) in the direction described; the path often recommended in guidebooks is up and down (or the opposite) of the waterfalls. There is a danger of slipping on the damp scree. What's more, discovering the waterfalls on the way up is much more beautiful. In this description, the passage to the belvedere at l'Éventail is a plus.

The last 5 kilometres are not very interesting and seem long compared to the beginning of the hike. VIEWS OF THE WATERFALLS early in the morning are perfect, but the parking fee is exorbitant at €15, which is unheard of.

Very nice, but very crowded in the first part!
Paid parking: £15 for more than 4 hours!

I don't mind paying for parking at a tourist attraction that draws large crowds. Local residents don't have to pay for maintenance, waste collection, repairs, toilet facilities, etc.
However, they could adjust the price depending on the time of year, charging less during the week and out of season, which would spread out visitor numbers.

I imagine you did this route yesterday, Sunday, and not today, Monday. It seems impossible to me that it would be very busy on a Monday morning at the end of September in the rain.

One wonders how many people there would be if parking were free.

We did the route in reverse, starting from the Ilay car park (free parking), and reached point 7 in 10 minutes
We set off early (8.20 a.m.) to avoid the midday crowds at the waterfalls.
The route is very well marked, the landscapes are varied, and the trail is generally not difficult, despite a few steep and more challenging sections and often wet and slippery ground.
The waterfalls, all magnificent but different, follow one after the other between point 7 and "l'éventail" (the fan) near the waterfall house, where you can stop for a drink or a meal.
One small regret at this time of year is the low flow of the river, which detracts a little from the splendour of the site as seen in the guidebooks.
The section on the right bank of the Hérisson (between the S/E point and point 3 where you rejoin the waterfall trail) is much less frequented and the trail is a little less well maintained. The walk is pleasant but there are few points of interest apart from the small hamlet of Ménétrux and the fan-shaped viewpoint, which offers a beautiful view.
In summary, this is a very beautiful circuit, best enjoyed in dry weather and with good footwear.

A very touristy hike.

Some lovely sections! I enjoyed doing it twice as part of an early morning trail running outing. A varied route for training. The woodland is refreshing, as are the waterfalls.

Tip: Park at the top (free parking but fills up quickly if you arrive late in the morning) rather than at the bottom (€10 flat rate with crowds).

Beautiful hike with magnificent waterfalls. Unfortunately, the weather was not good (there was still a good turnout despite the 10 degrees and a few drops of rain).
The second part of the hike was a little less interesting, except for the view from the belvedere.

Loop around the Hérisson waterfalls top! We did this walk on 1 March. There weren't many people on the paths and the waterfalls were very pretty. The path is very well signposted, so you can't go wrong!

Be careful if it's been raining recently: make sure you're well shod 👍

Hiked today in fine weather.
Nothing to say about the uphill section, which is very well laid out and easy to access. Be careful on the second part of the hike (the path to the belvedere and the descent), which is technically complicated and not very well signposted.
But the hike is very good! To be done in dry weather.

Best done early in the morning on holiday. From 10:30 onwards, the section along the waterfalls resembles the motorway at peak times.
No major difficulties. Rocks can be very slippery in wet conditions.

A very nice hike with a climb that allows you to see all the Hérisson waterfalls. The climb is very busy in summer.
The return loop provides all the peace and quiet we were looking for. Be careful on the way back in case of rain, as the descent is a little technical.
Beautiful views on the way back.
A magnificent hike.

Lovely walk, shady and cool.
Lots of people near the Hérisson by late morning.
To avoid the pay car park, it is possible to park in 1 other car park next to the route, but this means changing the start by several kilometres.

Hello,

The downside: the €15 car park charge!!!!

There are currently 340,000 visitors a year.

If it were free, how many do you think there would be?
