The banks of the Lot in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

This walk allows you to discover Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, the River Lot and its towpath, then the limestone plateau above the village. I also suggest a shorter alternative route.

Description of the walk

Access: In Saint-Cirq, the car parks near the village are pay-and-display and often full in summer. We left the car in the motorhome area on the right just after the campsite when arriving via the bridge over the Lot.

Please note! This route is not signposted.

(S/E) From the motorhome parking area, head towards the Lot river and then turn left onto a path.

(1) The path turns into a trail, which you follow, still alongside the Lot. Come out onto a small road and turn right to pass near a mill and a lock.

(2) Continue along this road which runs alongside the river and pass under the citadel.

(3) Further on, join theGR®®36-46trail markers coming from the left. The road then moves away from the river to cross fields. Pass close to some houses.

(4) At Castan, leave the road and turn right, still following theGR®®, onto a path. Shortly afterwards, you will reach the banks of the Lot and follow it on the left along a wide path that soon leads to the start of the towpath carved into the cliff.

(5) Continue straight ahead, along the river. Pass under a railway bridge before coming out onto a car park at the entrance to the village of Bouziès, where the path becomes tarmac.

(6) Follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®®36-46to cross this village or, if you wish, return to the starting point by following the alternative route described below. In detail: at the exit of the car park, continue straight ahead, veering slightly to the right. Continue to the road that crosses the river, cross this road (not the river!), continue straight ahead for a few metres and then turn left. You will come to a road, turn right and then right again at the three-way junction. Continue along this road, leaving a road that branches off to the left further on. You will come to an intersection marked with a cross.

(7) Continue straight ahead, still on theGR®, on the road that climbs slightly to cross the fields. You will come to a fork with a cross.

(8) Turn right, then shortly afterwards turn right again onto a small road that descends towards the river. Cross the railway line, then immediately turn left to follow the railway line below.

(9) Further on, let the road turn left at a bridge under the railway line and continue straight ahead on a path, still following theGR®®. This path approaches the Lot and runs alongside it as closely as possible. You will come out onto a road at the hamlet of Port la Lèque. Leave theGR®® markings to follow it to the left and pass under the railway line.

(10) At the intersection, in the bend, ignore the path that branches off to the right and continue along the road heading north. You will soon come to another road. Turn left and continue along this road until you reach the crossroads.

(8) From there, return to the next crossroads via the same route you took on the way there.

(7) When you reach this fork, turn onto the road on the right to return to Bouziès. You will arrive at a hamlet.

(11) In the centre of the hamlet, opposite the cross, turn left, then after a few metres turn right to rejoin the D40 further on. Turn right and then, immediately afterwards, leave this road and turn right at the bend.

(12) At the intersection, turn left towards Les Estayrals onto a small road that climbs and further on becomes a track.

(13) Shortly before reaching this house, leave the path and take a trail on the left. Here you will find local markings that you will see here and there until the end of the route. This narrow trail winds through the undergrowth and joins the D40.

(14) Cross this road and continue straight ahead. Further on, ignore another marked path on the left that descends towards the towpath and continue straight ahead until you reach a road.

(15) Take this road on the right. Just after a right-hand bend, and before reaching the D40, take a path on the left that leads to one of the car parks in the village of Saint-Cirq. From this car park, head for the junction of the D8 and the D40. As these roads are very busy, a path has been created to reach the village safely. Follow this path, which runs alongside the D8 on the right, to descend towards the village. At the bottom of the path, turn left and then descend to the right onto Place du Balat. Stroll through the village centre.

(16) Then, to return to your car, go down the other side of the village via Rue Droite, which passes below the church, then via Rue de la Pelissaria.

(17) On leaving the village, take a path that descends to the left towards the water sports centre. Continue straight ahead, ignoring a path on the left. Walk along the cemetery wall and then, at the intersection, continue straight ahead. Shortly afterwards, take a path on the left to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The alternative is to return to Bouziès. This route is approximately 10 km long, with an elevation gain of 320 m.

From point (6), at the car park exit, turn left and then take the first street on the right to cross the village. At the crossroads with the road that crosses the river, continue straight ahead. Turn left into the next street to come out onto another street, which you follow to the left. Continue to reach (11).

In the past, many goods were transported by river on the Lot. This river is still navigable on one section and the locks are still in operation for pleasure boating. To travel up the Lot, engines are now used, but in the past, boats were pulled upstream by animal traction from a towpath that ran alongside the river. At this point, the cliff fell directly into the Lot, leaving no room for a path, which was therefore carved into the rock over a distance of 5 km. Note the bas-reliefs in the cliff.

A promising hike that ultimately wasn't all that exciting. The climb up the Combe (in full sun) is quite tough going. As for Saint Cirq, there's a tourist shop every five metres, which is frankly disappointing . However, the banks of the Lot are very pleasant and the website highlights them without mentioning the climb up to Saint Cirq. Definitely worth a visit!

The towpath along the Lot is absolutely remarkable, with small roads but very little traffic and beautiful views all along the way.

Far too much paved road.
The path near the Lot, which is a possible alternative, is not maintained and too dangerous to take a group along.

Very pleasant despite the heat, but Saint-Cirq-Lapopie was overrun with tourists, not necessarily hikers.
The route from Bouziès along the towpath is very pleasant, quiet and fairly shaded, with the added bonus of a few boats passing through the lock.
I really enjoyed this hike. Thank you.

We set off from the campsite in St Cirq Lapopie, where the path was a little slippery at this time of year.
We discovered this magnificent towpath, which was not very busy. We were afraid we would have to turn back before reaching Bouziés. The water had covered the path for about fifty metres (5 to 10 cm).
A superb walk to do in spring.
It's a shame that during this difficult time with Covid, few people were wearing masks in the streets of St Cirq

Starting from Bouziés, we discovered this magnificent towpath, which was quiet at this early hour. It was very pleasant to start the hike with this easy route, which we extended to the mill/lock at St Cirq at the foot of the cliffs, with a beautiful view of the village below.
Then we climbed the old brigands' path (Way of the Cross) on the heights of St Cirq, which overlooks the village. It's superb, the views are magnificent and we were the only ones there to enjoy them!
We descended into a beautiful valley and then climbed back up to the Cirque de Vènes
For the return trip, we chose to follow the yellow markings of the "Sur les traces d'A. Breton" (In the footsteps of A. Breton) trail
Excellent
Nearly 16 km... which we extended on the way back to Bouzèis to L'Ecluse (on the left side of the car park, passing under the footbridge) via a wide path that runs alongside the Lot
A very beautiful hike... provided you are curious and willing to stray from the beaten track from time to time
The Lot is 💚💚💚

We set off from the motorhome parking area in Bouzies. We followed the route in the direction indicated. From the start to point 13: tarmac. We walked at a brisk pace. We are experienced walkers. Apart from being in the countryside, which is great in itself, nothing else caught our attention. If we were to do it again, we would skip the whole section from the start to point 11. We went straight to point 12. St Cirq is worth a look. Beautiful view of the village and the Lot. The return trip along the towpath is the most original part. Well... that's it. Incidentally, the busiest part of the circuit is around St Cirq. We are currently crossing the Causses du Quercy and the Célé valley. We miss it all. We'll be back. Thanks anyway to our scout.

A hike we already knew but very enjoyable. The section along the river is very nice, especially the path carved into the cliff. You then arrive on foot in the heart of St Cirq Lapopie.
We only did the Bouzies-St Cirq loop, which seems to be the most interesting part, taking 2½ hours, including a visit to St Cirq and a break.

A lovely walk rather than a real hike, except for the distance.
The information about free parking is accurate and very useful.
All other car parks are pay-and-display.
After point 3, you can reach the banks of the Lot by taking a dotted path on the right. It is easily passable, rather than going all the way to point 4.
We turned back after Bouzies because we were tired of the tarmac. We took the same route back, but there was still a lot of tarmac!
The only real difficulty after point 12 is a steep climb... on tarmac!
The arrival in Saint Cirq Lapopie is pleasant
The places to see are the banks of the Lot, the towpath, Bouzies and Saint Cirq Lapopie
The rest isn't worth seeing and a simple return trip along the riverbanks would suffice. There are also two picnic areas.

A very beautiful hike, done on Whit Monday.
We left very early in the morning, afraid there would be crowds. In the end, there weren't many people at all!
It's a lovely village, and the towpath is a must!
We had no trouble following the route (I didn't really trust the description )
However, at point 7, we turned back: too much tarmac for our liking!
At point 12, it gets steep! The same goes for points 14 to 15. These are perhaps the only "slightly difficult" parts of the hike. We had a picnic at point 15.
In Saint-Cirq, we retraced our steps because we enjoyed the walk so much!
A nice, easy day's walk with some lovely views.

This route is very busy in the afternoon along the towpath.
We tried to follow the banks of the LOT all the way, but we quickly came to paths filled with nettles and brambles when we left the GR.
For information, parking in Saint Cirq was free on this date (barriers removed)
