Parking in the centre, in the spaces marked on the ground, around the church on Place André Ville, or in front of the town hall on Place Pierre Michaud.
(S/E) From the start, follow the D88 towards Claveisolles, pass the Town Hall and then the school on your right. Arrive at the first crossroads.
(1) Keep the return route on your right and continue straight ahead along the D88. After a left-hand bend, continue until you reach a right-hand bend at the crossroads, marked by a crucifix on the left and directional signs.
(2) Turn left onto the Chemin de la Rivière towards Vers le Bois. Cross the Ruisseau de la Ponsonnière, then join this hamlet and the paved road "Chemin vers le Bois". Here, there used to be a path going up opposite, but it no longer exists. See Practical information.
(3) Go up this small road on the left. You will come to a stop sign before the D133. Continue right for about 100 metres until you find a path on the right. It goes up towards the École Communale Bernard Pivot.
(4) Just before the school, take the path on the left that descends; a few steps lead to the D133. Go left along the road to reach the centre of Vaux at the town hall.
(5) A pretty square with the Tourist Office, a reconstruction of the famous urinal from "Clochemerle", a small museum and toilets complete this tour of the village.
Return to the Town Hall and climb the few steps to reach Rue du Château. Turn left and, passing an old wine press, reach the Route de la Cime (D49) at the crossroads with the Calvary (hidden under the greenery opposite you).
(6) Follow the D49 to the left for a few metres and at the fork, turn right towards Sottizon. Near a metal pole supporting antennas, turn right and climb up to the Madone.
(7) After enjoying the superb view, descend a few metres to find the path heading west, pass between the vineyards and rejoin the D49.
(8) Keep right towards Chamfray Nord (sign). Continue straight ahead until you reach the fork.
(9) Turn right uphill onto Chemin des Buis, heading west towards Sibertot. Stay on this path and continue in the same direction until you reach the intersection with a track on a hairpin bend.
(10) Follow it to the right, at the Sibertot sign, turn right towards Montmain. The road descends at the beginning, passes close to a house (a place called Montmain), then climbs steadily to the left to join the intersection of the D44 and D88E roads at the Col de la Croix Montmain.
(11) Cross the D88E and take the wide path opposite that branches off to the right and north towards Croix de Chardiat. This is the GR®76 (well signposted). A short climb followed by a gentle descent leads to Croix Chardiat (Croix Pion on the IGN map).
(12) Continue straight ahead on the GR® to the Col de la Croix Rosier.
(13) At the Col crossroads, continue straight ahead on the GR®76. The path climbs through a clearing, heading north until you reach a left turn at the sign for "vers Barnoux". Leave the GR®76 and follow the track on the right towards "Hayes de Barnoux". A slight descent leads to the junction with the D76 and information signs about this protected area.
(14) Cross the road and take the path opposite towards Bois de Vaux. After an open ridge and then some trees, you will arrive at the Taulauzière sign, just before a coniferous forest.
(15) At the crossroads just after the sign, turn left towards La Sablière. The path goes around the Télégraphe to the north. Admire the Château de Varenne on your left as you pass.
(16) At the bottom of the descent, ignore the paths leading up to Crêt David. Keep right and take a grassy track that first descends and then climbs back up to Roche Martin.
(17) At this small pass, continue straight ahead. Descend the stony path through the forest, then leave the forest at the crossroads (IGN elevation 593).
(18) Then turn right to begin the descent to the south, then south-south-east. The descent is not particularly difficult. Keep your bearings, ignoring the paths on the right and left, to reach a small road at a place called Les Roches.
(19) Follow it along its loop on the left, ignore the hamlet on the right and at the crossroads turn right onto Chemin de Brouilly, which continues south-south-east, then south through the vineyards. After a left-hand bend, the tarmac road arrives atthe first houses at a place called Le Duchampt.
(20) Passing through Chemin du Duchampt, with the Perréon bell tower in sight, finish the descent to return to the junction you came across on the way there.
(1) Turn left and follow the same route you took on the way there to return to the car park (S/E).
