To get to the start point from Matouba, follow the N3 towards Rivière Rouge and park at the side of the road, just after the hairpin bend to the left.
(S/E) Continue along the road until you reach the left-hand bend where a path starts on the right.
(1) Take this path, the Matouba Interpretation Trail, and follow it up a gentle, steady climb until you reach a fork.
(2) Continue to the right until you reach the next fork.
(3) Keep to the right, towards Bains Chauds de Matouba (signposted). The path remains wooded but, as you approach the river, there are a few roots and stones. Continue straight on to reach the Rivière Rouge.
(4) You can take a short break to cool off and admire the rocks. Cross the Rivière Rouge, ideally upstream of the waterfall where the current is weaker, and continue along a more challenging and steep path, which is not very wide, with a bit of mud even in dry weather, and plenty of roots. After a steep climb, you’ll reach a wider track; continue straight on until you reach a fork.
(5) Turn left and, on a round trip, climb up to the Bains Chauds du Matouba.
(6) After enjoying the spot, head back the way you came and descend to the previous fork.
(5) Continue to the left, leave the woods and follow a tarmac road until you come to a path on the right, in the wide left-hand bend.
(7) Take this somewhat steep path, which features handrails and ladders to climb over. The descent is steep but very manageable, thanks in particular to the safety equipment and signposting. Cross the Rivière Rouge and head for the hairpin bend on the N3 (S/E).
