Description of the walk

From Basse-Terre, take the N3 towards Saint-Claude, then the D11 towards La Soufrière. The car park is located at Les Bains-Jaunes.

(S/E) The Pas du Roy trail starts at the end of the baths. Take the paved path and cross the ravine (be careful of slippery paving stones), then continue along the path.

(1) At the intersection, leave the main path and follow the trail to the right towards Le Galion. The first part crosses a wetland and then winds its way between tree roots. Begin the gentle descent and take the last few bends with caution.

(2) Cross Le Galion and turn left at the intersection. Climb towards the waterfall; the last 100 metres must be climbed using a knotted rope (see photo).

(3) Arrive at the waterfall, where a dip under the cascade will be most welcome. Admire the view of Les Saintes. Turn around and return to the intersection.
Turn left onto the Armistice trail. It is a very steep slope with a 300-metre elevation gain and takes 1.5 hours to climb. There are many tricky sections before the next landmark, but fortunately, the task is made easier by notches cut into the rock, knotted ropes and numerous roots. The trail is very wet.

(4) At the top of La Citerne, turn left and join the tarmac road (viewpoint over Basse-Terre, the Monts Caraibes and Grande-Terre). Follow the road to the left, pass at the foot of La Soufrière and join La Savane à Mulets.

(5) Turn left onto the Pas du Roy trail and return to the starting point (S/E).

If you're not afraid of getting wet and doing a bit of climbing, this hike is for you. I'm not particularly athletic, but I still managed to do it. However, I wouldn't recommend it for children. When I reached the summit, the fog was thick enough to cut with a knife and the wind was strong enough to knock you off your feet. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to see, so I'll have to do it again when the weather is better. It took me 3 hours and 50 minutes to complete.
One thing is certain: you will have peace and quiet. I only came across one couple at the Chute du Galion.

Physical route starting from the galleon, especially in wet weather. Question asked: ravine or trail half an hour before the cistern, but an attractive part of the hike. Allow extra time depending on your physical condition.

Very good, done on the descent, combined with the popular climb up La Soufrière!

A very pleasant hike

The real difficulty lies in the climb up to the cistern...
Unfortunately, it rained quite a bit that day, so there was no view of Lake Flammarion or Les Saintes.

It is possible to avoid the final stretch of road by going via the Col de l'Échelle

Definitely worth doing again in good weather

Hello, everyone. I would like to share my opinion.
First of all, as has been said, the hike takes more like four hours because the section between the Galion waterfall and the cistern is quite difficult. Despite this, our children managed to complete the hike in an extra hour. The trail is marked with tape, but in any case, there is very little risk of straying from the "path".
I would not recommend this hike for children under 10 as some sections are difficult.
The return trip is less interesting as it is on tarmac, but the views are beautiful.
I have a few photos to share.
Good luck.

A very beautiful hike, the Galion waterfall remains little known but is a must-see. However, the journey times are unrealistic, even for experienced hikers. Allow for 50% to 100% more time (i.e. double) due to the nature of the trail and the time it is nice to spend at the waterfall, with a rope climb to reach the foot of the waterfall.
