Arbois - Pupillin

Fifth stage of the Échappée Jurassienne. This stage allows you to discover the remote valleys, particularly that of Planches-Près-Arbois, and to understand the geological phenomenon, with views from the Belvédère de la Roche du Feu. You will then descend to the bottom of the valley to reach the village of Planches-Près-Arbois and its tufa waterfall. Next, you will head towards the wine-growing village of Pupillin, the "World Capital of Ploussard", where you can explore its viewpoint, 19th-century church, Saint-Léger oratory and beautiful fountains.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: L'Échappée Jurassienne

Description of the walk

Red and white GR®59 trail markers and specific signs bearing the symbol "J"

(S) From the campsite in the heart of the vineyards, turn left, north-east, onto Rue de la Piscine. Start off gently until you reach the top of the Nouvelles hillside (vineyards).

(1) Turn right to descend between the vineyards. Continue downhill for about 200 metres until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Turn left to continue south-west until you reach the intersection with Rue des Nouvelles.

(3) Continue right (southeast), pass a campsite called Paysan and descend to the signpost "Coteau des Nouvelles" in the village of Mesney.

(4) Turn left towards La Roche du Feu on Rue des Nouvelles, then turn right onto Rue du Ruisseau, which continues onto Rue Regain. At the Mesney municipal workshops, continue left until you reach the crossroads.

(5) Continue straight ahead on Rue de Chamboz. Stay on this road until the intersection with Rue du Bas du Mont at the exit of the village of Mesney.

(6) Turn left (east) to begin a steep climb on a stony path. Continue climbing until you reach the intersection with aPR®® at the top of the hill.

(7) Turn south to begin a descent to the fork at Les Pommerets. (elevation 409)

(8) Keep left to climb through the woods to the signpost on the D107.

(9) Carefully follow the signs for La Roche du Feu/Pupillin to the left, then after 150 m in the bend, cross the D107 very carefully and climb up the marked path that heads into the woods to the south-east. After a steep climb, you will arrive at the tarmac road Chemin de Parencot. Continue along this road in the same direction until you pass over the Tunnel de la Ligne des Hirondelles.

(10) Stay on the Chemin goudronné de Parencot, keeping a cultivated area on your left. After about 200 metres, turn right (south-east) onto the forest track, which initially climbs and then descends to the signpost: Belvédère de la Roche du Feu. You are now in the car park. Follow the signs to the Belvédère de la Roche du Feu, located 150 metres south-west.

(11) Return to the car park and follow the forest track on the right, which heads south-east and runs alongside the Roche de Feu, offering superb views. You will arrive at the tarmac road Champs des Maisons. Continue right until you reach the signpost.

(12) Turn right onto the forest path and follow the signs for Reculées des Planches-Près-Arbois. Descend along the ridge paths of the Versée and Madame hills before arriving at a crossroads at the edge of the woods.

(13) Continue north, then south-west across the meadows, then follow the La Cuisance river on your right until you reach the village of Les Planches-Près-Arbois near the cemetery.

(14) Turn left onto Chemin du Moulin, then left opposite the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, then left again to follow the building along the D339 towards Montrond. Continue until you reach the signpost for Fontaine Dampierre.

(15) Turn left towards Reculée des Planches on Rue Claude Simon. Continue, looking up to see and admire the rocks of the Cirque du Fer à Cheval. You will reach the end of the paved road, which becomes a gravel path that turns right.

(16) Continue straight ahead on the path that runs alongside a tennis court, followed by a first waterfall, which is visible but located in the private grounds of Hostellerie Le Moulin De La Mère Michelle. Continue along the Cuisance river on a pretty path dotted with small waterfalls until you reach the signpost for Les Combettes. Turn left to cross the Cuisance and reach the Cascade des Tufs waterfall.

(17) Return to the Les Combettes signpost and continue left south-east to rejoin the GR®59. Stay on the forest path that climbs up following the stream to a small meadow at the foot of some beautiful rocks. Go to the end of the valley until you reach a small footbridge where you will see the source of the Cuisance.

(18) Continue downhill to the north on the path that runs along the right side of the Cousance. At the fork, take the wide path on the right and continue to the signpost indicating the Tufs waterfall on the left.

(19) Continue straight ahead (north) downhill to the village of Les Planches-Près-Arbois, where you will come to a give way sign.

(20) Turn right onto Rue du Vieux Mont, pass a pretty fountain and continue straight ahead on the uphill road, which is a dead end. At the last house, continue along the stony, grassy path, then turn left at the fork. Continue until you reach the signpost for Vieux Mont.

(21) Turn right towards Fer à Cheval via the GR®59. (Note: you can also take the Via Cluny here). Continue climbing as shown on the map, then turn right at the intersection and climb up to the crossroads. (You will rejoin the Via Cluny here).

(22) Turn left to finish the climb in a pasture. Continue to the signpost for Monts Denons.

(23) Keep right towards Belvédère du Fer à Cheval, entering the forest. At the viewpoint, enjoy a superb view of the entire valley and its vertical limestone cliffs. Continue towards Pupillin to arrive near Auberge Le Fer à Cheval on Route de Champagnole (D469).

(24) Cross the D469 with caution, then follow the car park on your right until you reach the end, where you should turn right towards Pupillin, as indicated by the signpost. Stay on the forest track, ignoring any side tracks. Continue until you reach the junction with the Route Forestière de Brétigny.

(25) Continue along this forest road heading north-west. Continue to the intersection at elevation 561.

(26) Leave the RF Brétigny and follow the forest road on the right that enters the forest and goes around the western part of the Cirque du Fer à Cheval. Continue to the tennis court.

(27) Continue straight ahead (north/northwest) to continue downhill. Continue to the intersection with Chemin Grandmont

(28) Turn right, then left onto a ridge. At the intersection with a PR® trail, keep heading north/northwest and continue downhill to the top of the cliffs of the Cirque du Fer à Cheval. The path will take you west. Continue to the crossroads above the Arbre du Présiden.
