Les 3 Becs via the Grande Combe, then Pas de Picourère and Pas de la Laveuse

A beautiful, long hike that alternates between forest, alpine meadows and ridge paths before returning through the forest.
A gentle climb through the forest via the Grande Combe, which zigzags between two cliffs. Then the view opens up between the Pas de Siara and the Pas de la Laveuse, passing by the Veyou and close to the other peaks of the Trois Becs. Descent through the beech forest.
The effort is richly rewarded by the variety of landscapes and superb views over the Vercors and the Saou Forest syncline.

Please note: the route passes through a wildlife sanctuary. Certain sections are closed to the public between 15 May and 15 July. Special signage and a diversion from the GR®9 have been put in place to guide walkers; seehere

Description of the walk

Park in the silo car park, near the Auberge des Dauphins.

Yellow markings to the ‘virage de l’ane’

(S/E) From the car park, walk alongside the Atlas cedars, past the Auberge des Dauphins, to reach the eco-guards’ office.
Continue straight on to reach the Chemin de la Grande Combe, which climbs gently through the forest at the bottom of the valley.

(1) At the “Les Douglas” signpost, the path narrows as it climbs more steeply. On the right, a wooden guardrail marks an old stone dam. Continue through the valley along the riverbed until you reach a forest track at the Virage du Pré de l’Âne, where you leave the forest and enter the mountain pastures.

(2) Continue climbing at the bottom of the valley to reach the Pas de Siara, which offers a magnificent view of the Col de la Chaudière.

(3) Turn left onto the clearly marked path that climbs to the Veyou.

(4) At the edge of the forest, turn right and reach the summit of Le Veyou. The view opens up to the east and north.

(5) Return to the previous fork at the edge of the woods.

(4) Head right through the undergrowth towards Le Signal.

(6) At the fork, turn left, passing beneath the Signal along a clearly visible path to avoid a short climb. Ignore the path on the right which descends from the Signal and reach the Pas de la Picourère.

(7) Continue towards Roche Courbe, then ignore the path climbing up to the right and continue along the hillside.

(8) Ignore the path on the right and continue straight ahead. Enter the woodland, pass the Col des Auberts and, at the next fork, turn right to quickly reach the Rocher de la Laveuse.

(9) Continue along the path (GR®®), pass the Pas des Auberts and reach the Pas de la Motte through a sparse forest.

(10) Leave theGR®® and turn left to head deeper into the forest and descend to the forest track suitable for vehicles. This descent is steep and can be slippery (dead leaves, small stones).

(11) Continue along this track to the right and descend gently through the forest. Follow it for about 4 km until you see the sign on the left indicating the Auberge des Dauphins.

(12) Follow the path to the left and descend to the inn via the well-marked, easy path, then head to the car park (S/E).

The weather made for some stunning views... it’s quite a climb, but the reward is well worth it.
I recommend it

The first 12 kilometres offer a fairly varied route through unspoilt countryside with spectacular views from the summit! The last 8 kilometres are a little monotonous.

Reminder: drones are prohibited on the Vercors highlands!

Please excuse me for repeating myself regarding the closure of the path at La Roche Courbe from 15 May to 15 July. My comments on the ascent via the Porte de Bari remain valid all year round. The ascent via the Grande Combe is, however, exceptional for its rich flora (ferns, lichens, green plants), which gives it the feel of a tropical rainforest. Best regards, Ollivier M

Hello,
From 15 May to 15 July, the ridge between the SIGNAL peak and the ROCHE COURBE peak is closed to hikers due to "temporary peace for the chamois". Therefore, the route must be modified just before the climb to Rochecourbe (point 7) with a descent via the "Passage de Picourère" trail, then a climb back up to La Selle (point 11) via the Girards refuge. The route then resumes its normal course. This means you lose 1.5 km of ridge walking but gain a walk in the forest. Modified route: 9 hours, 19 km, 1,300 m elevation gain. A challenging route but with magnificent scenery alternating between forests and mountain pastures. The original route is best done in early May or late July if you want to see the chamois in the Parc des AUBERTS (points 9 to 10).
PS: you can replace the climb up the GRANDE COMBE (rocky and technical) with the easier climb up the forest track (Porte de Bari and Bergerie du Bois Vert), which takes the same amount of time (3 hours) and is brighter.
My opinion: HIKE FOR FIT HIKERS.

A hike that really takes some effort!!

You won’t be disappointed – you’ll probably be soaked, but utterly impressed by these well-earned, breathtaking views. The Saou Forest and the whole area are simply magnificent!

It’s relatively easy to follow and you’ll only be exposed to the sun at the peaks. In that sense, it’s very pleasant. The climb is long and the scenery is beautiful from start to finish – no need to wait until you reach the peaks.

A must-do!

The hike took just over 7 hours (excluding the lunch break), done in the opposite direction. It was quite challenging due to the elevation gain, with some very steep sections in quite a few places
Route variation: from point (5), I continued along the marked path directly towards point (6) (even though the section through the forest looked quite nice) and took a detour via the climb up the curved rock.

But magnificent scenery and trails!
Most of the hikers I met were on the path leading to Le Veyou (between (4) and (5))
