The Fond d'Oxhe valley from Ombret-Rawsa

This is a somewhat challenging hike through the woods on either side of the Fond d'Ohxe valley in the Saint-Lambert National Forest.
Starting from the ruins of the Church of Notre-Dame in Ombret, the circuit skirts the hamlet of Les Communes before climbing into the woods, then descending shortly afterwards into the Fond d'Ohxe and climbing back up the other side through the Bois des Dames and Bourgogne woods. The return journey is again through the woods, on the opposite side, offering some beautiful views of the Meuse valley at the end of the walk.

Description of the walk

Start: end of Rue des Prisonniers Politiques, Ombret-Warsa, 4540 Amay, opposite the old church.

(S/E) Take Rue des Prisonniers Politiques in the opposite direction and, at the "grotte de Lourdes", take the cul-de-sac opposite which passes under the road. This joins Rue Les Croupets, which you follow for about 100 metres to reach number 26. Take the path starting to the right of the property. This path follows the slope, then runs alongside the stream and finally ends in a street.

(1) Turn right, then left to follow the path that runs along the hillside again and climbs diagonally up it. When you reach the road, cross it and continue straight ahead uphill through the woods. The path soon runs alongside a meadow, bends to the left and then to the right, and continues between two meadows. Continue to the end and turn left onto the grassy farm track. The track enters the woods (state-owned forest) and comes out at a large intersection, a car park (unpaved) and an information board.

(2) Take the path on the left, right next to the information board (do not take the path that goes through the car park). This Sentier du Facteur descends to the bottom of the valley and comes out onto a tarmac road between two houses. Go down this road to the right, then take the road on the left that crosses the stream ( Villers sign visible ).

(3) About 50 metres after the stream, turn right onto the path (barrier) that heads back up and runs alongside the stream above. Ignore the first path that climbs up to the left (mountain bike sign) and continue until just before the end of the path (tarmac road visible ahead).

(4) About 50 metres before the tarmac, turn left onto the farm track going up the slope. The climb is quite long and steep. As you approach the top, pass under a first high-voltage line (firebreak), then under a second one (pylon, hunting cabin). At the intersection, continue straight ahead on the path that enters the woods again and, at the fork, keep right to begin a somewhat steep descent towards the bottom of the valley.

(5) At the bottom, the trail ends on a forest path. Take this path to the left and soon follow the stream, passing at the foot of a rock face at a place called Les Rochettes. Continue along the stream until you reach a wooden footbridge (path coming from the left), cross it and climb up the slope (NB: the start of the path is sometimes muddy, so if necessary, bypass it by jumping over the two large rocks immediately after the bridge).
The path passes in front of a house and ends a little higher up at a crossroads in the middle of fields and meadows: turn right towards the woods.

(6) Enter the woods (sign for Forêts domaniales de Neuville-sous-Huy et de Saint-Lambert) and take the path directly to the left, which soon begins a gradual descent to emerge onto a paved road. Go up this road (on the left) for 50 m, then turn right onto the forest track that runs above the road and the stream. Follow it for 1.7 km: when the track starts to climb a little more steeply and enters a deciduous forest, it joins another forest track.

(7) Turn left at a sharp angle and go up this forest track (be careful not to start going down the track). The track turns into a path and winds through a stand of deciduous trees. It comes out onto a forest track which you follow briefly to the left before turning right. Fifty metres further on, the path bends to the right and begins to descend towards a secondary valley.

(8) At the bottom of the valley, cross the stream and go straight up the poorly maintained forest track, turning left after 200 metres. This track leads to a wider forest track (with signposts for walks): turn right.

(9) At the next crossroads (telecommunications mast), keep left and, at the end, turn right onto the forest track. Continue straight ahead at the intersection that appears shortly afterwards, and again at the junction of the two forest tracks 600 m further on.

(10) At the next crossroads (meadow in sight), continue straight ahead, still under the canopy. The path soon leaves the woods (barrier) and continues along a paved road: continue to the next crossroads. Turn left into the dead-end street (sign) and follow it downhill for about 20 metres.

(11) Take the path on the right (opposite no. 44) which descends steeply, runs along the back of a house and enters a copse. Follow it down to the bottom to reach a street (Rue Bas-Thiers) opposite number 17. Turn right (slightly uphill) and continue for 200 m, then turn left into Rue des Bouvreuils (a dead-end street). After the houses, continue downhill on the path that continues the street through the woods. The path leads to Rue Les Croupets. Follow it downhill to the intersection, then turn left and walk alongside houses numbered 9 to 11. Take the narrow lane on the right (steep slope) to reach the main road. Cross the road and turn left and right to enter Rue des Prisonniers Politiques and reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

If you want to avoid the first hill, you can start the walk at Rue les Communes 23, 4540 Amay, at the information kiosk (shelter and benches) and join point (2) nearby. On the way back, turn right at the intersection (10) and follow the path that starts a few metres further on the left and joins the point (2) along a pasture. This reduces the hike to 10 km with an elevation gain of 188 m.

Long benches carved out of tree trunks at La Rochette (5) are perfect for a picnic by the water, sheltered by the cliff!

Worth a visit

Cafés in the centre of Amay in the immediate vicinity of the collegiate church.

First of all, yes, with the church renovation work, there is less parking space, but we still found a spot without any trouble.
The hike is very beautiful, and this Thursday the weather was lovely, with beautiful autumn colours still in full display!
It was 18 degrees when we had lunch in the forest.
We will do this hike again in early spring... it will certainly be just as beautiful!
In short, we loved it. The distance suits us very well, and it is indeed a bit challenging given the elevation gain.
Thank you

A very beautiful, fairly wild hike in a superb forest. The only minor comment is that we didn't like the planned starting point (car park at the end of a slightly sinister little street with building work going on at the church). We preferred the alternative mentioned (at the hamlet of Les Communes) without taking the shortcut. There is a larger car park (another nice alternative) very close to point 2 (go to the end of Rue des Communes and turn left onto a good dirt track for 100 m). There were a few people on Sunday, but only around points 2 and 10.
