From Amay (station) to Scry and back

This route, slightly modified to allow for a start and finish at a station, was part of an organised walk that attracted several dozen walkers, all of whom left delighted. The route offers the chance to admire the beauty of the Condroz forests and landscapes, as well as that of the Fond d’Oxhe stream valley.

Description of the walk

Start: Amay station, Rue du Pont (on the side of the track towards Namur – Meuse side).

(S/E) Take Rue du Pont, keeping to the right-hand side (for safety). At the exit of the roundabout, cross at the pedestrian crossing and turn right to follow the main road towards the Meuse.

(1) Cross the Meuse. At the crossroads in Ombret, turn left onto Rue du Centre. At the end of the street (after the old town hall, opposite the Marian grotto), turn right onto the small path that passes under the main road and climb Rue des Croupets (an old Roman road) to its top (junction with Rue des Bas-Thiers).

(2) Cross Rue des Bas-Thiers and continue uphill. At the top, continue straight on for 100 metres, then take the first path sloping to the left (after a large house) to reach a shelter with a bench.

(3) Take the path straight ahead (to the right of the shelter). Ignore the path on the left between the meadows and continue to the edge of the forest. Ignore the path on the right. Go through the gate and take the path known as the ‘postman’s path’ on the left immediately after the gate, between the gate and the information board. This steeply sloping path (watch out for the drop in the final few metres and on the concrete section) leads to Rue du Fond d’Oxhe. Turn right onto this street.

(4) At the crossroads, turn left to cross the bridge (Route du Bois des Dames), then take the first path on the right after the ‘Villers’ sign and the bend (caution: if the ground is wet, it is better to go through the gate rather than take the short cut, which can be very slippery). Follow the stream for a few hundred metres. Ignore the path leading uphill to the left (after a few metres along this path, there is a plaque commemorating a cyclist) and continue along the stream until the road comes into view straight ahead, about fifty metres away.

(5) Take the path that climbs steeply to the left and climb to the top. Cross the firebreak and pass under the power line to reach a hunters’ hut, opposite a pylon. Cross the path and head into the undergrowth. At the Y-junction, take the path on the left, which leads to the top of the rocks at a place called La Rochette (viewpoint).

(6) Continue along the path to the left, then head down the slope to the right along the hillside until you reach the road (Rue d’Oxhon). Turn right onto Rue d’Oxhon. At the top, turn left onto Rue de Clémodeau (this street offers a beautiful view of the Condroz Ardennes), then take the first street on the right (Rue de Marnawe). At the bottom of Rue de Marnawe, cross the stream and turn left onto Rue de la Forge. At the T-junction, continue left onto Rue de Mannehay.

(7) Turn right onto Rue du Neupont. Take the second street on the left (Rue du Bois Billon) and follow the uphill path to the Scry water tower.

(8) Turn right onto Rue à la Croix, which continues as a path leading to L’Armoulin (an old mill converted into a large building). Take the street on the left to pass in front of this building, then immediately take the path leading uphill to the right. Ignore a path on the right.

(9) At the T-junction with the second path, turn left then immediately right onto a steep, descending path. Follow this path to Rue de Saint-Jean-Sart.

(10) Cross the road and continue straight on into Rue Chaumont. When this street turns right, continue straight on along the path, at the end of which you will see an information board with a map of the forest. Turn left into the forest and go down the steep slope to the Route du Fond d’Oxhe (Etang du Trou Bottin).

(11) Take the road on the left for 20 metres, then turn immediately right onto the path closed to vehicles by a barrier. Continue straight along this path for several hundred metres, until it meets a track leading down to the right. Take this path to the right (note that the path shown on the IGN map just before this one, heading towards the forest house, no longer exists). Reach the bottom of the descent.

(12) Just before the junction with the Route du Fond d’Oxhe, take the path on the left that runs parallel to this road. At the end of the path, continue straight on along the road to the first house.

(13) Take the path climbing to the left (blocked by a barrier), reach the top and continue for about fifty metres to the right.

(14) Turn left just before the hunters’ hut, take the first path on the left, then at the crossroads, take the path on the right. Continue until you meet a track coming from the left (near a large pile of stones).

(15) Continue straight ahead along this track. Cross the junction formed by a path on the left and a path on the right. Take the next path on the left (note: it is not always very visible). This path descends steeply after a flat start. Cross the Route du Bas-Thiers, turn right and take the path that immediately descends to the left alongside a house. At the junction, turn right onto Rue Alex Fouarge. Pass in front of a Renault garage and reach the Grand-Route.

(16) Turn right onto it towards the bridge. In front of the school, cross the pedestrian crossing, continue left, then cross the next pedestrian crossing. Continue right. Just before the newsagent’s, turn left and go up the stairs. Turn left. Cross the Meuse. At the roundabout, turn left onto Rue du Parc Industriel. After the container park, turn right and head straight towards the station, where the route ends (S/E).

Notes

(S) There is a large car park at Amay station (on the side from which the route starts). On the square in front of Amay station, there is a bakery (closed on Sundays), a butcher’s shop (open on Sunday mornings), a chip shop, a café and two Chinese restaurants.
(2) Pierre Falhotte: patisserie (open only on Sundays at 2 pm).
(3) Covered shelter with a bench.
(7) Pharmacy, bus stop with shelter (line 97 Huy-Nandrin-Ouffet: no service on Sundays). Continuing straight on for about 700 metres to the crossroads with Rue de Mannehay (on Rue Sur les Communes), you arrive at the centre of the village of Villers-le-Temple (municipality of Nandrin) where there is a bakery, a grocery shop and a café.

Worth a visit

(2) Pierre Falhotte: viewpoint over Amay. According to legend, it was from this spot that Saint Ode threw her staff across the Meuse, promising to build a church (the collegiate church of Amay) where it landed. Rue des Croupets is a section of the Arlon-Tongeren Roman road.

(3) The Postman’s Path reveals 395-million-year-old puddingstone rocks (the mouth of an ancient river flowing into the sea).

(6) A prehistoric site occupied during the Neolithic period (-5000). A large number of objects found on the site are housed in the Curtius Museum in Liège.

Mr Defoort,
Thank you for your message. It’s a shame you didn’t specify what bothered you about points 2 and 3, so that I could take it into account.
I’ve just re-done part of the route, and I’ve amended the description to be as precise as possible (I hope).
As for point 4, I should indeed have written ‘the first path on the right after the bridge and the bend’.

A lovely walk. We found that the description at the start of the walk (points 2 and 3) wasn’t quite clear enough. Then at point 4 (the path isn’t ‘immediately to the right after the bridge’, but a little further on). When you’re not familiar with the area, you have to search around a bit, but we found it in the end, so a huge thank you to the author.

(Walk starting from Ombret school): 20km / +600m; a lovely, varied walk; a few roads here and there; otherwise a beautiful area. Highly recommended, overall 4/5. Christian V
