Start at the car park opposite 39 Quai de Loire Hervé Mhun in Saint-Satur, at a place called Saint-Thibault.
(S/E) With your back to the Loire, set off to the left at the end of the quay via the GR®31, on the ‘Loire à vélo’ route.
Cross the small bridge over the Vauvise and continue to the junction towards Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre.
(1) Take the path on the left to the banks of the Loire. Turn right towards La Pointe and follow the stony path alongside the river for 500 m. There’s a lovely view of the river bend.
(2) Continue along the path until you rejoin the ‘Loire à vélo’ cycle route. Cross over and walk 700 m between two fields to the Route de la Gargaude. Turn right onto this road and follow it for 300 m to the Aubelles crossroads
(3) Turn left into the avenue of plane trees on the GR®31. Cross the Vauvise again, then the canal and the road, to enter the village of Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre. Head up through the village along Rue de l’Église for 300 m, then turn left up Rue de la Chaume à Got to join the route of the old Cosne-sur-Loire–Bourges railway line.
(4) Follow the old railway line to the right as far as the Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre viaduct; leave the GR®31 on your left and continue straight on. Cross the metal railway viaduct, then take the track on the left. Join a track and continue keeping to the right until you reach the entrance to the old Sancerre railway station at a place called Le Haut de Creux.
(5) Continue along the road, cross the Saint-Satur viaduct and carry on to the old station. Cross Rue de la Gare and continue along the cycle path (a variant of the ‘Loire à Vélo’ route) running alongside the old railway line, then past a vineyard. Pass a hillock and head down the road to pass under the railway bridge on the right before crossing the D955 departmental road and the canal via the Pont de la Cabarette.
(6) Turn left onto the grassy path leading down to the right of the cycle path. After about 500 m, cross the stream via the metal footbridge and emerge at the Sancerrois golf course (hole No. 13).
(7) Take the path (GR®®31) on the right to cross the golf course to the entrance, about 800 m away, then continue for about 100 m.
(8) Turn left into the field, following the hedge to reach the banks of the Loire. Continue to the right along the river, passing the swimming pool, then the open-air café and the campsite, until you reach the connecting canal.
(9) Take the steps and cross the canal via the bridge over the lock gate. (Caution! Danger. Do not go through the lock gate.) Continue along the Loire on Quai Georges Simenon and cross Rue des Ponts. Continue along Quai Hervé Mhun to reach the car park (S/E).
