Start at the car park opposite 39 Quai de Loire Hervé Mhun in Saint-Satur at a place called Saint-Thibault.
(S/E) With your back to the Loire, start on the left at the end of the quay on theGR®31, on the Loire à Vélo route.
Cross the small bridge over the Vauvise and continue to the crossroads towards Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre.
(1) Take the path on the left to the banks of the Loire. Turn right towards La Pointe and walk 500 m along a stony path running alongside the river. Beautiful view of the meander.
(2) Continue along the path and join the Loire à Vélo route. Cross over and continue for 700 metres between two fields until you reach the Route de la Gargaude. Turn right and continue for 300 metres until you reach the Aubelles crossroads
(3). Turn left into the avenue of plane trees on theGR®31. Cross the Vauvise again, then the canal and the road to enter the village of Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre. Climb up through the village along Rue de l'Église for 300 metres and turn left up Rue de la Chaume à Got to join the old Cosne-sur-Loire - Bourges railway line.
(4) Follow the old railway line to the right until you reach the Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre viaduct, leave theGR®31on your left and continue straight ahead. Cross the metal railway viaduct and continue along the narrower railway track to the old Sancerre station at a place called Le Haut de Creux.
(5) Continue straight ahead along the road and cross the Saint-Satur viaduct, then continue to the old station. Cross Rue de la Gare and continue along the cycle path (a variant of the Loire à Vélo cycle route) running alongside the old railway line, then a vineyard. Go over a hill and down the road to pass under the railway bridge on the right before crossing the D955 departmental road and the canal on the Pont de la Cabarette bridge.
(6) Turn left onto the grassy path descending to the right of the cycle path. After about 500 m, cross the stream on the metal footbridge and you will come out at the Sancerrois golf course (hole No. 13).
(7) Take the path (GR®31) on the right to cross the golf course to the entrance about 800 m away, then continue for about 100 m.
(8) Turn left into the field along the hedge to reach the banks of the Loire. Continue to the right along the river, passing the swimming pool, then the guinguette and the campsite until you reach the junction canal.
(9) Take the stairs and cross the canal via the bridge above the lock gate. (Caution! Danger. Do not go through the lock gate). Continue along the Loire on Quai Georges Simenon and cross Rue des Ponts. Continue on Quai Hervé Mhun to reach the car park (S/E).
