The Alkurruntz tour from Urdax

From the beautiful little Navarran village of Urdax, we set off to conquer Alkuruntz. There are several picnic spots to choose from and the view is magnificent on both the French and Spanish sides.

Description of the walk

In Urdax, park at the car park at the end of the square.

(S/E) From the village square, cross the small bridge and turn right. Climb a fairly steep, wide cement path to a gatehouse.

(1) Take a partially gravel dirt track that climbs to the right. The path passes through a grassy area with an unobstructed view.

(2) Continue climbing in a series of hairpin bends. After a few minutes, it joins a wide horizontal path.

(3) Take it on the left (yellow mark).

(4) At the junction at the top of this path, take the path opposite that climbs upwards (yellow mark). Further up, it joins a wide horizontal path.

(5) Take it on the right and then immediately turn left onto a path that climbs steeply.

(6) Go through the fence near the first picnic area (table, benches, barbecue, water).
Continue and, at the crossroads, take the path opposite, which is sometimes thorny and overlooks the road (N121B). After a small clearing, you will arrive at a second picnic area with tables, benches, numerous barbecues, water points, toilets and car park. We are about a 2-hour walk from the start.

(7) At the end of the car park, take the small road on the right that goes uphill (marked green/white).

(8) At the top, after the parking spaces, turn left onto the path that starts off horizontally before climbing and joining a track. Continue right on this track, passing a turn-off on the right and arriving at the "Baztan" sign.

(9) Continue a few metres past the sign and cut across the grassy track opposite, which avoids a tedious detour. Alkuruntz towers above us on the right at 933m. Join the track and take it to the left.

(10) At the crossroads, you can enter the campo de tiro (shooting range) and 20 metres away you will find a beautiful hunters' hut (tables, benches, shelter, barbecue and water point... access is permitted but you must leave the place clean).

Return to the track and turn right at the first bend towards Alkuruntz. The path crosses a round enclosure made of stakes. A few metres further on, take the path on the left that climbs up to the pass (15 minutes from the hut).

(11) A few metres further on, take a horizontal path on the right that runs alongside standing stones, crosses rocks and descends steeply to the road/path junction you passed on the way up.

(8) From there, retrace your steps in the opposite direction to the junction.

(4) Do not descend to the right as you did on the way up, but take the green/white marked trail to the left.

(12) At the three-way junction, turn right onto the path that descends to the village (S/E).

Notes

By car, to reach Urdax from Saint-Pé-sur-Nivelle, take the D3, pass Amotz, then at Cherchebruit turn left onto the D4 to Dancharria (Spain). Take the N-121B past the numerous "ventas" and, after about 2 km, turn right onto the road that descends to the village. Toilets at the car park at the start.

(11) From the pass, it is possible to climb to the summit of Alkurruntz; the path is clearly visible. At the top, there are stone steps, a tunnel built by Franco's army and a letterbox (about 45 minutes round trip).

Worth a visit

The village is well worth a few minutes' visit and on the way back you can stop at Dancharria to do some shopping.

Not many people out due to the gloomy weather. A very nice walk, easy despite the distance. And beautiful scenery despite, or perhaps because of, the bad weather, i.e. clouds but very little rain!

There weren't many people on this route, but it was winter and a Saturday! Urdax is a lovely starting point with a nice inn where you can enjoy a drink in the sun on the terrace at the end of the hike.
We followed the route except that we climbed the Alkurruntz by following the northern ridge in front of us after the point (8). It's fun but quite steep, so only attempt it if you are used to this kind of off-trail terrain. On the other hand, you tread on pretty peat bogs between the rocky blocks, so I don't recommend this route as these areas are disappearing. The return climb from the pass at the point (11) is preferable.
However, on the way back, I recommend taking the track that goes around Baratxurieta (624 m) to the west from the point (7). It starts on the hillside (do not take the other track that descends further to the left) at an altitude of 550 m, offering beautiful views and taking you away from the road and the associated noise. The track joins the path described above at the point (5) -> leave the track and take the path marked in yellow on the left.
All in all, we had a very good day on this very interesting route.

The hike is very beautiful, but the start is difficult on the concrete track. You can do it in the other direction to avoid this steep section, but in that case you will have to walk downhill on the way back. The hike is not as difficult as advertised.

Hello,
The hike was superb from start to finish, but my biggest disappointment was the fog once I reached the top of the Alkurruntz
The Francoist army tunnel in total darkness (torch or good headlamp essential) is very interesting, but as soon as I reached the chambers with loopholes, I couldn't see a thing (more fog).
A quick note for fellow hikers: between points 6 and 7, overlooking the N 121, the path has been cleared.

Happy hiking, everyone!
Hiking is a walk, not a race.

Like Guy, I started the hike on the dirt track (point 13), which is much more pleasant (more shade, better condition). The path overlooking the N121B (markers 6 to 7) has become impassable (too many brambles and nettles). Perhaps there is an alternative through the field? Otherwise, everything is superb. A word of advice if you do this hike in summer: set off early. 1) The car park at the bottom of Alkurruntz will not yet be full, so there will be fewer people at the top. 2) The view from the top will be spectacular.

For my part, I did it the other way round. At first, I came back by the cement road.

Please note that all the signposts along the route indicate the Basque name for Urdax (Urdazubi).
Always follow the markings (white and green).
There are frequent junctions if you follow the signs; compass directions would have been helpful.
After a 2-hour climb, you will arrive at a large car park at the foot of Alkurruntz (for the lazy ones).
The summit is easy to reach, but not in the blazing sun, and the view is magnificent.

A very beautiful hike combining forest trails with open spaces offering superb views of the Spanish Basque Country on one side and the French coastline on the other.
For my part, I preferred to start the first circular by taking the return path (after a few hundred metres on the concrete track, turn right instead of left), which is less steep and quickly offers beautiful views. However, for the second circular, you do need to follow the directions given, as the descent is very steep!

And the icing on the cake: it's completely peaceful, far from the crowds that flock to the coast!
