Ruta de la ferraria, Askar, and the Millennial Oak in Urdax

A beautiful hike that takes us to the magnificent village of Urdax, then up to admire the surrounding peaks from which we can even see the ocean.
Last but not least, the thousand-year-old oak tree is a sight to behold.

Description of the walk

By car:
Cross the border at Dantxaria (Dantxarinea) and continue on the N-121-B road, then after about 1.5km, turn right onto the NA-4402 which leads to the centre of Urdax. Park near the San-Salvador monastery.

(S/E) Head east past the "Turismo", cross the Nivelle and turn right.

(1) After a few minutes, turn right onto the road signposted Ruta de la Ferraria (the sign has recently disappeared). This path overlooks the river.
Further up, ignore the green/white signposted path which climbs to the left.

(2) 300m further on, you come to a house/shed, leave the track which climbs to the left and take the path which descends to the right of the house, alongside a fence and fruit trees.
(3) After about 4 minutes, leave the track and take a right-hand path down into the forest (it's a good way down!).
At the bottom, cross the river on a footbridge and climb back up to pass behind the Bake Ola farm (Gainekola Borda).
Take the track and go through a large gate.

(4) Come to a track and turn right for about 600m.

(5) Turn left onto the "Loiara" path, marked in green and white.
Continue along the path, alternating between sun and shade, ignoring the small switchbacks, until you reach the end of a wood.

(6) Head due South to the summit of Alkuruntz.
Further on, follow a pretty little house to the right and, after 100m of track, fork right. The path is still signposted and rises steeply. Reach a grassy plateau.

(7) Just after a low stone wall, ignore a path to the left and continue along the signposted path with the Azkar in your sights.

(8) Reach the pass and take the obvious North-East path to the summit of Azkar.
From the top, use a map to find out the names of the various peaks in the area.
Return to the pass and follow the signs for "Urdazubi" down the other side.
The path is always marked in green and white. Pass a drinking trough (non-drinking water) which is often used by local Pottoks as a meeting place.
1/4h after the pass, at a crossroads, ignore a path that climbs to the left and continue downhill to the right. 1/4h later, join a road and take it on the right as if to climb towards the Argandoita antennae, in full view.

(9) On the way up, just before a cattle grid, turn left (North) onto the path marked "Axularen Txokoa", still signposted in green and white.
100m further on, leave the path on your left and continue down through the ferns.
Further on, reach a new signpost.

(10) Follow the "Axularen Txokoa" sign to the left. The descent is sometimes steep and tricky if it has rained.
Arrive at a magnificent thousand-year-old oak tree with a trunk 6m in diameter.
Take the track to the right, still heading for "Axularen Txokoa". Further on, cross a cattle grid, ignoring a path to the right.

Further down, at a crow's-foot, continue straight on (the markings on the left are crossed out).
Pass the Axular farm and descend to the N-121-B road.

Turn left. 150 m further on, after crossing the Nive river, turn right (the signposting remains the same) and drive into the village on a delightful little road lined with drinking-water fountains, sculptures, a wash-house and beautiful farmhouses.

(E) Re-cross the Nive to reach the village square (S/E).

Practical information

At the start, there's a fountain and a toilet.
Along the way, a few streams and a drinking trough provide refreshment (head, neck, limbs), but the water is not drinkable.
You have to wait until the last 1/4h to find plenty of drinking water.

In the nearby area

The village of Urdax is magnificent. Don't hesitate to wander through the narrow streets around the mill.
A tourist office provides a wealth of information.
Next to this "Turismo" is a small animal park, home to a multitude of birds of prey.
The monastery often hosts art exhibitions.
On the way back, don't hesitate to stop in Dantxaria for some shopping.
A word of advice: if you want to stock up on culinary pottery, stop off on the left at Venta Felix, a small, friendly, well-stocked and economical family-run store opposite the gigantic PEIO, where you can buy the rest.
On the way back, you can also make a detour to Ainhoa, one of France's most beautiful villages.

No particular difficulties. Slight discrepancy between the GPS and the route taken at points 2 and 10.

This is the 2nd time I've done this lovely hike, which is partly shaded and very pleasant in hot weather. Beautiful views. Impressive thousand-year-old oak tree. No particular difficulty apart from a few slippery sections after point 9 (good shoes and poles required).
Not very busy at the end of September.
Thank you for this suggested route.

I can confirm that the GPS route is not correct and leads to confusion with the details. Just 2 details to make sure you don't get confused:
- After turning right at the 1st bridge after the tourist office, a few metres further on you need to take the path on the right alongside 2 buildings with white and green markings.
- At point 2, fork right to go past the first sheepfold and along the fence. When you reach the corner of the fence, take the path on the right.
Otherwise, the walk is pleasant apart from the last part which is on tarmac and concrete, but is enhanced by beautiful, well-maintained houses, fountains and wash-houses.

A very small difference between the explanations and the route, but of no great importance. At point 2 at the sheepfold, follow the explanations and continue along the clöture and not the gpx route which takes you to the Bake Ola farm.
Very nice walk on the morning of 06/09/2021 in very hot weather, the route is well shaded. We didn't meet anyone. Thank you for this walk.

The GPX track is sometimes out of sync with the path, which makes it hard to know which way to go. There are lots of brambles on the path, so trousers are advisable.
Very little use, only one encounter near the thousand-year-old oak.

A very fine, shady walk around Urdax, ending with the chếne; it is possible to take alternative routes, but everything is perfectly signposted.

The tracks at the start are crazy. Points 2 and 3 are wrong, if you follow the description you go even further off the track and the descent is dangerous, if not impossible on a greasy path....

I recommend the smaller "l'askar par l'argantoita", which is much more precise and pleasant and allows you to climb the mountains.

Beware of the sharp angle at points 6 and 7, 2 aggressive dogs when passing a farm if the gate is not closed. I've done these steps 4 times and had this happen to me twice.

Otherwise superb scenery, I recommend the "smaller" one.

Nice hike but like everyone else, don't trust the track at point 2! But it's easy to understand as the river is easy to spot.

A fine walk, but the return route was very, very muddy due to the recent rain.

A short hike with no real difficulty. The view from the summit of Mont Askar on a clear day is very pretty, except for the face where the antennae can be seen
The descent straight down to the magnificent oak tree is very pleasant and the discovery of the oak is fascinating!
Thank you for this route and the work of the Visorando team!

A very pretty walk: start in a charming village, the respectable thousand-year-old oak at the end of the route, chestnuts to glean, typical sheepfold, pottoks, L'Askar... very interesting.
The GPS route is not always reliable, but the description is very well written and pleasant to follow.
Many thanks to the person or persons who recently cleaned the paths along the first half of the route (chemin de la forge).

A very pretty walk in beautiful sunshine.
The route is very shady which is nice when it's warm like today.
I agree with TABOULECHAT, from point 2 continue along the fence and do not trust the GPS (do not take across the field).

Very nice walk. The only downside is that it's better to trust the description than to follow the GPS track. After point 2 (sheepfold) the GPS track leaves the path to join point 4 at a crossroads, which is completely wrong, fortunately the description is good. Same problem after point 10, just before reaching the road.
I'm surprised that no-one in the previous comments mentioned this. Perhaps they only used the description, which is perfect. Otherwise a superb walk. To be repeated, eating in one of the Urdax restaurants rather than picnicking.
