The summit of Les Malvalettes and the Cabre valley

Accessible from the Maison Forestière du Malpey (access via the road of the same name from the N7), this hike is located near Mont Vinaigre, the highest peak in the Esterel (614 m). It is a little-used route, mostly following unmarked paths. Its diversity of landscapes makes it interesting, with valleys and ridges surrounded by pine, eucalyptus and cork oak trees. Best enjoyed on a sunny winter's day rather than in the height of summer.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park at the Maison Forestière de Malpey, walk to the forest house and take the track that passes in front of it, heading due south. You will come to a junction of tracks.

(1) Take the track on the left, which is closed to road traffic by a barrier.

(2) At a place called Cantine du Porfait, continue straight south along a track until you reach a crossroads.

(3) Continue along this beautiful track, which initially heads north-west. At the next fork, keep right. You will then reach a junction at a small stream.

(4) Leave the main track here and take the path that climbs to the left, heading south. You will come to another intersection of tracks and a path.

(5) Turn right, walk past the scree for about 30 metres and find the path that climbs to the left. Follow the trail to the Sommet des Malavalettes. "Note the few eucalyptus trees on this section, whose barkless trunks are bright white."

(6) From the summit, the highest point of this hike, there is a superb view of Saint-Raphaël and the sea. Continue eastwards and join a track. Turn right and continue straight ahead, heading south.

(7) Caution: this is the start of a steep descent where you will sometimes need to use your hands. Walking sticks are invaluable on this section. After this tricky but beautiful descent, you will come to the Carrefour de Colle Noire.

(8) Take a wide track on the right towards the ruins of the old Maison Forestière des Malavalettes. Pass the ruins and continue downhill until you reach an intersection with a path on the right at the bottom of the valley.

(9) Leave the main track and turn right, heading north-west along the path that runs alongside the Vallon de la Cabre. You will reach another intersection where the path heads due north.

(10) Then take the track on the left which crosses the ford and leads to the Col de l'Essuyadou.

(11) Turn right onto a track. Further on, you will reach the Carrefour de Roche Noire.

(12) Take the second track on the right, heading north-west then north along the hillside, offering superb views. You will reach another crossroads at around 360 m.

(13) Continue north-west. This last section is very pleasant and leads gently downhill to the fork in the road you took on the way up.

(1) Continue straight ahead to reach the car park at the Malpey Forest House (S/E).

A good route for exploring the northern part of the massif, with beautiful unobstructed views under blue skies.
Note that the first hour of the route is very rocky, resembling scree slopes, due to recent erosion.
The summit of Les Malavettes is covered with fragrant eucalyptus trees, followed by a descent that is slippery but very scenic.
No problems with GPX.

Very pleasant walk with beautiful views of the coast. The paths are very stony but very pleasant as they are not very busy.

We set off from the Testanier Pass. Very beautiful and varied landscapes. No difficulty with the GPX. Picnic on the bench at the summit of Malvalette. Steep and rocky descent after the summit of Malvalette.

Hello,
I know this mountain range quite well, but I hadn't yet explored all these paths. Thank you for the discovery.
I agree with the reviews already posted. I would add that there is a welcome bench at the top of Les Malavettes for a picnic break with a view of the sea.
Two suggestions for alternative routes:
- At the Colle Noire crossroads (point 8), I took the path opposite instead of the track. You reach point 9 at the end of the path after about 50 metres on the track.
- At point 13, I took the path that climbs gently. Follow the blue markings to reach the "summit" of L'Aigre, where there is another welcome bench. Continuing along the track takes you back to point 1 with beautiful views of the semaphore and Mont Vinaigre.

A magnificent hike thanks to the diversity of the landscapes and views you encounter along the way. At the end of the first third, you will find a very welcoming bench with a magnificent view, perfect for a picnic. The descent to point 7 is a little tricky (it's very steep and very slippery). The last third takes you back up to the start via a long slope in three stages (a little tiring for tired legs). In short, a very beautiful hike, sometimes demanding but very rewarding. With Visorando, you can't go wrong.

We started this hike at the Testanier Pass on the advice of hunters who were organising a hunt from the Malpey forest house towards Mt Vinaigre. So we walked an extra 2 km, making a total of 15.3 km... something to bear in mind if, like us, you're doing this hike during the shortest days of the year.
We had a picnic at the summit of Malvalettes, on the rocks, with a breathtaking view of the entire coast.
Pay attention to the route; the start of the trail after the summit of Malvalettes, towards the cistern, is very "discreet"... We used the Visorando app to regularly check our position.
Given the lack of directional signs, this hike is not very popular, which adds to its appeal.

We did this individual route (as a pair) to scout it out for a group.
A very beautiful hike with one major drawback. Instead of descending via point 7, it is better to turn right (east-northeast) between 6 and 7, then left to rejoin the original trail. This adds about 200 metres to the hike but avoids a dangerous descent with a group.
Breathtaking views of Mont Vinaigre throughout the first part, then of the Mediterranean and St Raphael, and finally of Pic de l'Ours and other remarkable peaks of the Esterel.
The small pond between points 8 and 9 is a pleasant spot for a picnic break if needed.

Hello, very pleasant hike with varied landscapes. The paths and trails alternate. It was difficult to find the trail between points 6 and 7, when you reach the summit after passing the Malvalettes summit, after the fire cistern. Otherwise, superb landscapes over Saint Raphaël and the Mediterranean. Highly recommended.
