The Sommet des Escampons starting from Luminy

Starting from Luminy, near the Tennis-Swimming Club House, a circular route takes you along the ridges to the Sommet des Escampons. An easy walk, though with a short steep section at the start, offering unobstructed and superb views of Marseille, its southern districts (and beyond) and the sea: Île de Riou, Pointe de Sormiou. The route is fairly busy in its first section and quieter once you reach the circular route around the Sommet des Escampons.

You are in the Calanques National Park, which is subject to specific regulations. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in a fine of up to €1,500.

Description of the walk

Park at the Lumigny Tennis and Swimming Club House.

(S/E) Take the dirt track north of the club and follow the club’s boundary until the first junction. Turn 90° right onto the track, keep left at the next junction onto the concrete road, and you’ll find a water tank at the start of the ridge in a bend. Enjoy a beautiful view of Marseille from here.

(1) Turn left onto this ridge, which runs alongside the DFCI (Forest Fire Defence) gravel track. Follow this track until you reach a junction with a path.

(2) Turn right onto this track and continue up the winding path to reach the summit of Les Escampons.

(3) Begin the descent opposite, heading towards the Mont de Luminy junction. Pass the path leading there on your right and continue straight ahead. Join the DFCI track at a water tank.

(4) Turn left onto the DFCI track; this is the same one you took on the way out. Follow it and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there to return to the Club House car park (S/E).

No water sources or significant shade except at the start.
Hike on very accessible paths, though stony in the circular loop around the summit.
Footwear with good soles is recommended to ensure a pleasant walk.

Worth a visit

Beautiful views of Marseille and the sea towards the Calanques.
On the DFCI ridge path, note the numerous sprinklers installed in the pine forest to combat fires quickly and automatically.
As is the case throughout the Luminy area, there are numerous caches for geocaching enthusiasts.

A short hike, more of a lovely stroll. Very pleasant and easy.
We weren’t lucky with the weather (fog...) but we’ll be back for the views, which look lovely
The instructions are spot on (we didn’t download the GPS track as there was no need).

A lovely stroll rather than a proper hike for a Sunday afternoon, whilst we waited for the rain that never came....
A slight variation: at point 4, instead of rejoining the path we took on the way out, we chose to head back via some lovely little forest trails. Same distance, same time, including stops to admire the views of Marseille and its islands.
