The Signal du Glaserberg from the source of the Ill and via the Col du Neuneich

This hike allows you to discover parts of the region's history during the Second World War, in the context of the liberation of Alsace, by following part of the Sentier des Marocains (Moroccan Trail). It also allows you to discover magnificent landscapes in the Swiss Jura, the Sundgau and the foothills of the Vosges and the Black Forest, then to follow the source of the Ill on your return to the starting point.

Description of the walk

Parking at the exit of Winkel towards the La Charrière plateau, next to the information boards on the Source de l'Ill and the Sentier des Marocains. See practical information.

(S/E) Take the road, which is closed in winter, and follow the red and blue ring markings uphill.
After a few hundred metres, you can take a path on the left that overlooks the road and passes close to the shelters on the Sentier des Marocains.

(1) At the Charrière car park, turn left onto the wide path going uphill and follow the Yellow Ring markings. Continue along the Allée des Hêtres.

(2) At the Col de Neuneich, cross the picnic area on the right and take the "Schluraff" path towards Hornihof and Blochmont (red signposts). After a few dozen metres, at the Y-junction, turn right (note that both directions have the same signposts). At the edge of the forest, you will come to a crossroads. See practical information.

(3) Continue straight ahead towards the Hornihof farm. Before the farm, you will see herds of llamas grazing in the pastures to the right or left of the main path. This farm also has a dog breeding facility (Asian shepherd dogs). See practical information.

(4) At the farm buildings, continue straight ahead downhill. At the next crossroads, pass above the Stteinerhof farm and stay on the main path. The path leaves the forest and reaches a crossroads on the way downhill.

(5) Allow the path to join the road and climb up to the left on the Chevalet Rouge marked path, which overlooks the hamlet of Blochmont.

(6) Continue straight ahead, following the path uphill to the next crossroads.

(7) Turn left, at a 90° angle, onto the marked trail (Chevalet Rouge) which climbs steeply (the only difficult part of the day, but only for a short distance) to reach the ridges of the Glaserberg massif.

(8) Continue straight ahead along the meadows to reach the Signal du Glaserberg, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Swiss Jura Mountains.

(9) Then continue to the nearby crossroads.

(10) Enter the forest and continue straight ahead along the ridge.

(2) At the terrace behind the Col de Neuneich shelter, there is a magnificent view to the north. Then follow the marked path northwards and then westwards, marked with a yellow ring.

(11) When you reach a fork in the road, take the left-hand path marked with a yellow ring towards the summit of Glasserberg.

(12) At the summit, unfortunately, the view is limited due to the growth of trees. Continue straight ahead.

(1) Back at La Charrièrer, cross the car park, head north and follow the red ring markings.

(13) At the edge of the forest, before a left turn, leave the path and take the trail on the right that descends into the forest (Red Ring markings). After a left turn and then a right turn, you will arrive at a crossroads.

(14) Take the path on the right (marked with a blue ring) which leads back towards Winkel and follow the meadow where the source of the Ill has been channelled to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Practical information

The Ill is a tributary of the Rhine after crossing a large part of Alsace

(3). By taking the marked trail on the left, you can reach the Signal du Glaserberg (10) directly on the return trail.

(4) You can shorten the hike by taking the path that climbs up through the meadow on the left and leads directly to the point (8)

This hike can easily be done in winter, especially with snowshoes.
Signposts from the Club Vosgien.

There are shelters on the Charrière Plateau and its car park and at the Col de Neuneich, and a picnic table at the Signal du Glaserberg.

Magnificent views along the Allée des Hêtres, near the Hornihof, and from the Signal du Glaserberg over the Swiss Jura mountains (Les Rangiers in particular and, on the north side at the Col de Neuneich, over the Sundgau, the Southern Vosges and the Black Forest).

The hike can be done in either direction but seems easier in winter or wet weather in the direction described, with the steep climb from the point (7) which can become very slippery in the opposite direction.

In the nearby area

The sections of the hike from the starting point to point (1) and between point (13) and the finish are part of the historic "Sentier des Marocains" trail, which commemorates the arrival of Moroccan troops during the Second World War to liberate Alsace.
There are information panels about these events at the starting point and at the La Charrière car park. You can see several shelters used by these troops above the road before reaching the Charrière plateau.

A pleasant route; be sure to follow the markings at the first bunker, as it is tempting to follow the trail straight ahead.
There is a steep climb at this point and the path is a bit congested.
At the dog farm, you can go up to the left to shorten the distance and reach a lovely picnic spot before rejoining the return route.

I did this hike with a group of elderly people, so I chose to shorten it by going from point 4 to point 8. We really enjoyed this route: it was easy going, with beautiful views of the Swiss Jura, and we saw lots of llamas. I think it's best to do it in early spring, before the trees have all their leaves, to get the best views of the mountains. You can drive up to the Charière plateau and then walk on almost flat ground, which means you can take people who have difficulty walking or families with young children. A wonderful discovery.

A beautiful route with some remarkable spots, views of the Swiss mountains, the Grand Kohlberg and the particularly pleasant beech tree avenue. A lovely encounter with numerous llamas.
The circular loop from the source of the Ill is of little interest, with a significant elevation gain on the road, but it does allow you to discover the Moroccan casemates.
You can park at point 1 and then drive to the source of the Ill.

A lovely hike with beautiful views of the Swiss Jura. We didn't see any markings on the steep climb and the path was barely visible. At this time of year (late December), the leaves cover the ground and hide the tracks. Three quarters of the hike is on a wide, very easy track.

pleasant, shaded route
The slope after the Blochmont farm is a bit steep until you reach the
bunker, but after that the walk is very pleasant
with the option of stopping for a bite to eat at Neuneich

We had a very good hike today. It's a shame we didn't have sunshine all day, just a few drops of rain to cool us down. Between sunny spells, we could see the Rangiers, the Vosges and the Black Forest. Beautiful views, pastures with llamas, deer, bunkers...

A beautiful hike on 31 December 2022 in spring-like temperatures!
Without the vegetation, beautiful views of the Swiss Jura, the Vosges and the Black Forest.

A lovely walk in the woods with pleasant paths, particularly the Beech Tree Avenue. A few points of interest:
_ Two or three viewpoints, but limited by vegetation
_ parks with numerous llamas sporting beautiful, colourful and varied coats
_ Dog breeding: passing nearby, you can see several dogs: large and barking loudly... fortunately separated from us by electric fences
_ A welcoming picnic area with greenery and tables/benches
_ Source of the Ill: no water and very ordinary location
Regarding the description, the main difficulty encountered was at point 4: it states: at the farm buildings (not very clear...), continue straight ahead downhill: so we stayed on the main path and after going down a few hundred metres, a barrier blocked the way. Having no choice, we turned back to find another way through.
Apart from this point, we would like to thank the author for his description, which is generally very accurate.

Hike completed on 14/07/2022 in very hot weather. The route is perfect for this type of weather as it is well shaded for three quarters of the route and offers beautiful views of Switzerland and the Vosges mountains in the distance.
Signs provide interesting information about the history of the village of Winkel during the Second World War.
The site of the source of the Ill is a beautiful place with a detailed explanation of this tributary of the Rhine.
