The Serre de la Pierre Plantée from the start at Cros de Boutazon

A round-trip hike, but with four circular loops that offer a variety of scenery.
The entire section along the ridge offers a stunning panorama of the successive mountain ranges of the Ardèche.

Description of the walk

At the Col de la Chavade on the N102 coming from Aubenas, turn right onto the D239 towards Mazan. About 3km further on, you’ll reach the Col du Cros de Boutazon, where the hiking trail starts.

(S/E) At the sign for Col du Cros de Boutazon (altitude 1378m), take the path leading down to the right.
Head towards the Cros de Boutazon signpost: take the road on the right for about 300m.

(1) Take theGR®7on the left. Continue until you reach the Le Claret signpost.
Leave theGR® here and take the white-and-yellow marked path on the right, which leads to a road.

(2) Cross it and continue along the road opposite, reaching the confluence of several streams, notably the Ruisseau de Pra Petit.

(3) Leave the road and take the track on the left which crosses the forest to reach the junction at the Cocu signpost.

(4) Turn left towards the Croix de Chaumiène, heading for the hamlet of Cocu.

(5) At this fork, leave the track on the right and turn left onto a new one.

(6) Take the track on the right to reach another crossroads.

(7) Turn left and you will come to another large crossroads with a sign for Croix de Chaumiène.

(8) Continue left towards Le Fenadou. Pass the ruined village of Chaumiène. Then, a little further on, turn right and walk alongside a farm currently being restored, La Veuve.

(9) Leave the track and take the path on the right leading to the ridge.
Reach the ridge.

(10) Begin the return journey by descending the same path to the Croix de Chaumiène signpost.

(8) Continue straight ahead to return to the crossroads you passed on the way out.

(7) Instead of continuing along the track you took on the way there, take the path that branches off to the left.

(5) Turn left back onto the track taken on the way out until you reach the Cocu post.

(4) Do not follow the track you took on the way there, but continue along the one on the left towards L'Astet. 50m further on, you’ll reach a fork where the left-hand branch leads to a house. Continue straight ahead, passing a cistern on your right, and you’ll come to a junction.

(11) Continue to the right.

(12) Take the track on the right and follow it until you reach a road at a place called Au Marquis.

(13) Continue to the left.

(3) Continue straight on to rejoin the outward route until you reach the crossroad.

(2) Take this road on the left and follow it straight on.
Leave the road and take the path on the left to return to the starting point of the walk (S/E).

Beautiful scenery. Views of the Mezenc, the Gerbier de Jonc and the Ventoux.
On the return journey between points 5 and 7, a house has been renovated and it becomes tricky to follow this section (we took the shortcut).
The same applies between points 12 and 13: it is only upon reaching point 13, at Les Marquis, that one realises the route has been diverted and that one should not have entered the field.
Consequently, I think the route needs to be revised or removed.

We did the route starting from the Col de la Chavade. The scenery was beautiful. The countryside was in full bloom at the beginning of June.

Stunning views, particularly the 360° panorama from the summit. Avoid this walk in strong winds as it is very exposed.

A walk taken along a slightly different route starting from Le Baron. The scenery is superb, especially at this time of year with the broom in bloom.
Note: if you walk the section of the route between (13) and (11) in the opposite direction, near the house ‘Au Marquis’, you’ll come across a sign saying ‘Pedestrians, mountain bikers: turn back to find the PR markings’ (old, obsolete guidebook), which directs you back to the route (3) – (4). In the other direction, at point (11), there is only an electric fence and a sign warning of livestock.
