Captain Anjot’s Trail

A nature trail with a few information boards and explanations about the wildlife and forest. Two picnic areas with tables. The viewpoint from the belvedere is lovely, with views of the Dent du Cruet and the lake.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Dingy-Saint-Clair town hall.
The path is very well signposted with yellow arrows on a green background.

(S/E) With the town hall on your right and the church opposite, take the road on the right, between the church and the house.

(1) Turn off onto the Sentier du Capitaine Anjot, which climbs to the right, and follow the clearly visible markings. You’ll come out onto Route de Verbin; follow it by turning left.

(2) Just before Verbin, take the shortcut on the right to bypass a bend in the road and continue to the right along a track suitable for vehicles.

(3) Take the path on the right: this is where the steep climb begins, leading up to the viewpoint. You’ll reach a spot with a table where you can have a picnic if you like.

(4) Continue up the steep climb, then turn right to reach the viewpoint.

(5) Enjoy the well-deserved view, retrace your steps and turn right onto the path which begins to climb again, though less steeply than before. Pass Plan de Bacon and reach a crossroads on the ridge (picnic table).

(6) The descent is signposted on the right. It follows a wide track, which is passable fairly quickly, winding down in a few broad bends before joining a tarmac road near Les Tappes.

(7) Turn right, keep right at the nearby junction and follow Route de la Blonnière to the Cloûtre junction.

(8) Turn left onto the small tarmac road (Chemin du Clu), then continue along a track to rejoin the tarmac at Chemin Chez Planchin.

(9) Turn right, go straight on at the junction to rejoin Route de la Blonnière. Head downhill to the left, then turn right at the school to reach the town hall car park (S/E).

Notes

Level of difficulty: easy. The path can be a bit slippery after rain, is passable by car in some places, and involves a stretch of road, particularly on the return journey.
The slope is steep for about 4 km. This route can be done with children, but they must be used to climbing in the mountains.
As the saying goes, slow and steady wins the race.

Hiking boots or sports trainers with studs are recommended.

If you’re not keen on walking along the road, I recommend returning via the path taken on the way up instead of doing a circular route.

A short, easy walk through the woods with a lovely view from the viewpoint; do take care, however, as there was still snow on the ridge and the descent had become quite slippery. Make sure you wear proper walking boots and bring walking poles – you’ll be glad you did. We completed the circular walk in under two hours.

As the route is quite short, once I reached the summit – Sur la Montagne – I carried on to Lachat – which was estimated to take an extra 30 minutes. I’m glad I did, as there’s a fantastic viewpoint, an information board and a picnic table.
You can either retrace your steps to take the planned return route, or carry on down to La Blonnière and back to Dingy St Claire. The total elevation gain is then around 670 m, taking 4 hours 30 minutes.

A generally easy hike, despite the 500-metre climb
The walk alternates between sections of tarmac road and forest tracks.

In hot weather, the walk should be very pleasant as it is mostly shaded by trees.

The view from the viewpoint or the panoramic vista of the Parmelan on the descent are magnificent, but some might be disappointed that the vast majority of the walk takes place within the forest, and therefore without any views of the landscape.

That said, walking in the footsteps of history is moving and fascinating, and the interactive trail is very educational for younger visitors (and not just them!), who also benefit from a completely safe path.
