Petit Orient Route

Half of this forest route follows the Vélovoie cycle path, revealing a wide variety of lakeside landscapes: the submerged forest of Lac d'Orient, the unobstructed view from the Lac du Temple dyke. This is in stark contrast to the dirt tracks of thesecond part of the route, which takes you through forests and countryside.

Description of the walk

Departure: Géraudot Beach

Yellow markings

(S/E) Starting from Géraudot Beach, facing the beach, head towards the forest on the left. After the boat ramp, take the cycle path.

(1) At the entrance to the Petite Italie peninsula (information sign): you can return via the same route to see the middle of Lac d'Orient (an extra 4 km).

(2) Still on the cycle path, cross an open area (flood spillway) which offers a beautiful view of Lac d'Orient.

(3) Cross the D43 and stay on the cycle path that runs alongside the road to Lac du Temple, then follow it along the Brévonnes dyke, which offers wide views of the lake and its nature reserve.

(4) Leave the dyke via a white path on the left, cross the road and follow it for 180 metres before taking a dirt track through the forest (watch out for electric wires to deter wild boar, which block the path in several places: you must step over them without touching them).

(5) At the crossroads marking the exit from the forest, turn left to stay in the forest, then take a shaded sunken path between the forest and the countryside.

(6) Take the D79 to the right for 220 metres, then turn left onto the white path that crosses the countryside and offers a view of the Étang de Maurepaire.

(7) Enter the Petit Orient Forest, taking care to avoid the electric wires again.

(8) Turn right to leave the forest onto the white path towards the plain, then follow this path straight ahead.

(9) At the crossroads on the plain (former campsite), turn left towards the bell tower of the church in Géraudot.

(10) Cross the D43 and follow it to the left, staying on the pavement and then taking the safe path to Géraudot Beach (S/E).

Unpaved paths: 50.1%.

- Not recommended for mountain bikes or horse riding: this route is cut off in several places by electric wires designed to prevent wild boars from leaving the forest (to protect crops).

- On Géraudot Beach: picnic tables, public toilets, snack bar

Worth a visit

- National Nature Reserve straddling Lac d'Orient and Lac du Temple: to preserve the lakes' flora and fauna. It can be visited occasionally with the Orient Forest Regional Nature Park.

An easy hike that is well described and well marked from start to finish.
The first part, which runs alongside the lakes of the Forêt d'Orient, is very beautiful and worth the trip alone.
The second part, in the forest, is disappointing compared to our usual hikes in the Fontainebleau forest.
This hike is best done at the beginning or end of the season because there are many unshaded sections.
Don't forget to bring water and sunscreen.
The path between markers 7 and 8 is very rough, with numerous ruts filled with water (which is surprising in August).
We will definitely come back for another hike or to cycle along the cycle path, as this is a paradise for cyclists.

Well-marked route. Alternating shade and sunny sections.
Not recommended during this season (March/April) as parts of the forest are very wet or even flooded.
Pleasant, easy hike.

A very pleasant route that allows you to approach two of the three large lakes (Lac d'Orient and Lac du Temple). It is very easy to complete as there is virtually no elevation gain. The alternation of tarmac tracks, small forest paths and wide dirt tracks, as well as shaded and open sections, makes this a very enjoyable outing.
Thank you for this beautiful route that is accessible to all.

Very pretty hike, but best done in spring or summer as the lake is empty from the end of September onwards.

Quite a lot of forest, which was welcome given the heat.
A pleasant, easy walk offering beautiful views of the temple lake and the bird sanctuary (without binoculars, it's not as good...).

Avoid the "extension" to the Petite Italie peninsula, which is of no interest, is not signposted, is not described in the hike and is infested with voracious mosquitoes (18 bites in less than 10 minutes).
