From the Bishops’ Palace to the Marsan Chapel in Saint-Lizier

An easy walk, mostly in the shade. Mainly a dirt track, tarmac only in Saint-Lizier. You’ll enjoy superb views of the Pyrenees, the Bishops’ Palace and Saint-Lizier Cathedral.

Description of the walk

Park in the Place de la Cathédrale or in front of the tourist office.

(S/E) Walk past the fountain towards Rue des Nobles. Take the small cobbled lane on the right which leads up to the palace gardens. Cross the first part of the garden diagonally, climb the few steps, then cross diagonally again to the gate. Climb the steps to the palace forecourt , where you can admire a superb panoramic view of the Pyrenees. Then go through the gate and up the staircase leading to the residence

(1) Inside the grounds, go down the steps on the left, then go through the gate and turn right into the Carré d’Huart. Continue along the road until you’re walking alongside the cemetery on your left.

(2) After the cemetery, leave the road and head uphill opposite, into the forest along the dirt track. Follow it straight on to the small gate, then continue along the main grassy path to the gate, enjoying the view of the Pyrenees.

(3) Head up the path to the left until you reach a junction, then take the path on the right. Follow this narrow path through the woods until you reach a road.

(4) Cross the road, turn right, and take the first street on the left. Walk past the houses and, at the end of the street, take the dirt track that runs alongside a garden before heading back into the woods.

(5) At the fork, take the path opposite towards the Chapelle du Marsan.

(6) At the next fork, turn left onto the path that climbs up to the Chapelle du Marsan to admire the view of the palace and the Pyrenees. Then head back down the steeper path opposite and return to the fork you took to reach the chapel.

(6) Carry on straight ahead until you reach a road.

(7) Turn left onto this road, then quickly turn left again to leave it. You’ll have a lovely view of the palace and the cathedral, with the Pyrenees still in the background… Carry on straight ahead and you’ll come out onto Rue de l’Hôtel Dieu.

(8) Turn right to head back up to the car park where you started (S/E).

We got lost at the point where it said "go to the barrier and continue along the grassy path". There was a barrier, but it was blocked and off-limits, so we climbed through the grass to another barrier just at a crossroads. As we hadn't arrived at the right place, we also took the wrong direction and ended up taking a much longer route to reach the Marsan chapel, with a very steep climb on the other side.

From the car park at the Palais des Évêques, the directions are poorly signposted, and then again, when you reach a hill, you have to search all around the area to find the path. The descent on the road to the cemetery is hazardous. I had chosen this hike because it was described as "accessible to all", given that our group included some older people who are still very good walkers, but at this point, they needed help, especially as it was raining.
After that, the route was pleasant.

To enjoy the view of the mountains, best done on a clear day.

I found out about this route from the email about new walks dated 18 April, so I walked it on Easter Sunday, the 21st. Well done to whoever posted it online. It’s a pleasant route, not too difficult (for a 73-year-old!), varied, and offering a superb view of our beautiful Pyrenees. I’d recommend having a bite to eat at La Grange de la Cité first, then visiting the Bishop’s Palace Museum – as we did – before setting off on this walk through the Couserans countryside.
