Le Rocher du Lion, starting from Buis-les-Baronnies

A walk through the woodland ending on the magnificent Rocher du Lion spur with a 360° view of the Ventoux, the Rocher Saint-Julien, the Lincueil and the Baume Noire. Sometimes on a forest track, sometimes on a narrow path, sometimes through olive groves, it’s a constantly changing and varied spectacle that will accompany you throughout the walk.

Description of the walk

After Pierrelongue, heading towards Buis-les-Baronnies, at the first roundabout, take the second exit on the right towards the Salle des Fêtes. Park in the large car park directly opposite.

(S/E) Retrace your steps to the roundabout and cross the main road (D5) with care. Take the small tarmac road called Chemin de la Motte, continue uphill past the houses, then you’ll reach a fork above the last houses. Turn right at the hairpin bend and you’ll soon find a narrow path on the left.

(1) Take this path and rejoin the fork after passing beneath the peak of the Rocher du Lion.

(2) Turn left to climb up to the Rocher du Lion. The path is marked in yellow.

(3) Enjoy the magnificent view, then retrace your steps back to the fork.

(2) Continue straight on along the narrow path.

(4) At the junction of the three paths, turn left: be careful not to take the path on the left just before the junction. Stay on thePR®® marked in yellow.

(5) Turn right across the field and continue to the Y-junction with a forest track.

(6) Turn right, leaving thePR®® trail, and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Follow the outward route in the opposite direction to return to the Salle des Fêtes car park (S/E).

A lovely hike; the climb up to Le Rocher is quite steep in places, but there’s a stunning view from the top. My watch showed an elevation gain of over 500 metres by the end of the hike. I’ve noticed that there’s often a difference between the advertised elevation gains and the actual figures, whether you’re using a hiking GPS or a smartwatch...

An easy route to follow.
The forest section can be tricky if you’re not particularly fit, or if you’re with children or perhaps a dog, as the slope is sometimes very steep and there’s a tricky section with loose stones.
Nevertheless, there are some lovely views from the Rocher St Julien.
Make sure you follow the route carefully.

A lovely walk. A few fairly steep sections. The climb to the top of Rocher du Lion is well worth the effort for the stunning views over Buis, Saint-Julien and Mont Ventoux.

The Lion Rock is definitely worth a visit. Stunning views! (except to the north, which is blocked by the second rock)
At point no. 1, it would be helpful to say “leave the track after the hairpin bend above the last houses”
It would be better to climb up to the second rock as well (path marked with a Yellow Cross but perfectly accessible according to locals) to discover the view on the north side rather than heading back down.
