The Rocher du Corbeau, starting from Saint-Sulpice

The Rocher du Corbeau is easily accessible from Aiguebelette-le-Lac. I suggest you get there without taking the car to cross the massif. I have deliberately extended the hike slightly by adding a bit of elevation gain and giving us the chance to walk through this massif and discover two passes and the François I Cave.
It’s a hike I particularly enjoy in winter (when it’s warm, I prefer to head for the higher peaks), but above all, as it’s mainly through woodland, the lack of vegetation means you can enjoy more views.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the church of Saint-Sulpice, where there is a small car park. If this is full, there is another one a little further up if you head back along the road that runs through the village.

(S/E) Follow the road past the church. It soon turns into a path. Continue uphill, passing a farm, then walk through meadows and woodland. You’ll reach a large meadow above three houses.

(1) Take the path climbing up to the right towards the Cols Saint-Michel and du Crucifix. At the next junction, turn right again, leaving the path heading towards Vimines. The signposting again indicates the two passes. Please note, it is marked ‘sentier des cols’ but has nothing to do with the one at the next junction.

(2) Here is another “sentier des cols”, but for us this is where the path splits. Continue straight on towards the Col Saint-Michel, leaving the path on the right that climbs to the Col du Crucifix, which you will take on the way back. This path climbs gently and is easy, even if the edges are a bit steep.

(3) Continue straight on, again leaving the path leading back to Vimines on your left. The trail leaves the edges behind to climb a little further across the mountain before reaching Col Saint-Michel.

(4) Continue along the path ahead towards the Grotte de François Ier. Just after a hairpin bend to the right, ignore a path branching off to the left and carry on to the grotto, which is on the right.

(5) Continue straight on towards the Col du Crucifix. Ignore the path on the left that descends to the Allemands car park and the forest road on the right leading to the Col du Crucifix. You will emerge onto the Voie Sarde.

(6) Ignore the path on the right that climbs towards the Col du Crucifix and head down to the left along the path leading to the orientation table. Do not hesitate to take the short round trip to it.

(7) Continue along the path and take two hairpin bends.

(8) Turn right towards the Rocher du Corbeau and reach the viewpoint.

(9) Turn back.

(6) This time, take the path on the left towards the Col du Crucifix.

(10) Continue straight on, leaving the path to the Col de l’Épine on your left and the path to Mont Grelle on your right. Return to the path leading uphill.

(2) Follow it in the opposite direction to return to the small car park by the church (S/E).

Notes

To shorten the hike, at point (2) you can continue towards the Col du Crucifix, i.e. do a return trip rather than a circular route. Whilst this reduces the distance, I do not think it significantly reduces the elevation gain.

Please note that the Rocher du Corbeau is situated on the edge of a cliff and that, although the path is easy, it does run along the edge of a steep slope. Children must be kept under supervision.

After visiting François I's cave, there is very little incentive to go all the way to Rocher du Corbeau, especially since it involves a 1 km round trip with little of interest to see. We went to the orientation table and back, then returned via the Crucifix Pass.
Otherwise, it was a nice walk, and we even had a picnic at the end of the walk in the Curé garden in Saint Sulpice.

A lovely route to take in late autumn when the trees are losing their leaves, with beautiful views of Lake Aiguebelette
The renovated Sardinian track is a fine piece of work. A superb achievement
Enjoy your walk.

Hike taken in autumn, under cloudy skies.
Quite busy throughout, with one or more groups of people at each viewpoint.
The route is easy and fairly quick (2 hours 40 minutes including breaks).

A lovely, circular route with no particular difficulties, offering views of Lake Aiguebelette, the historic cave of François I, and the Roman and Sardinian roads. Thanks to the author for this lovely route; next time I’ll extend it as far as Mont Grelle.

A lovely walk with stunning views; the forest section was particularly pleasant in the heat
