The Rock of Gibraltar from the border post

A short excursion to this little piece of England in the south of Andalusia. You’ll start by crossing a border to leave the European Union (see: Practical Information), then you’ll cross the runway of an international airport, which is quite a rare experience. You will then wander through the old streets of Gibraltar. You can then begin the climb up the Rock to meet the only monkeys living in the wild in Europe. There is an admission charge (£30.00 per person), but the experience is quite unique and the view from the top is absolutely incredible.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the many car parks on the Spanish side, in La Línea. We chose the “Aparcamiento Santa Barbara” car park (paid), due to its immediate proximity to the border post.

(S) Go to the border post and cross it. Then cross the airport runway (with great care), then head up Winston Churchill Avenue, then turn right onto Corral Road, to reach the Market Place bus station after 1.2 km.

(1) Go under the Grand Casemates Gates and emerge onto“The Square”, which you cross diagonally. Then take Main Street and after 300 m you will reach a crossroads.

(2) Turn left ontoEngineer Lane for 250 m, then turn right.

(3) Continue straight on along Governor’s Streetfor 250 m until you reach a fork in the road.

(4) Turn left onto Prince Edward's Road, then Devil's Gap Road, and walk for about 300 m.

(5) Go up the small flight of steps on the left and take the Devil’s Gap Footpath to reach Green Lane.

(6) Take the sharp left turn onto Green Lane, which, after a bend, becomes Old Queen’s Road. You will then arrive at the ticket office where you will need to pay £30 per person (credit cards accepted). Continue until you reach a fork in the road.

(7) Turn left onto Spur Battery Road and walk for about 500 m to reach a second fork.

(8) Turn left again onto Saint Michael’s Road and follow it for 300 m. Take the hairpin bend to the left, then the hairpin bend to the right, and after 80 m you will reach the start of a path on the left.

(9) Turn left onto Douglas Path, which will take you to the summit of the Rock of Gibraltar. Join Saint Michael’s Road, then Signal Station Road. Many tourists arrive in minibuses to enjoy the splendid view and photograph the monkeys. Continue along Signal Station Road, then Willis Road, winding down until you pass Tankerville Road on your right by about twenty metres.

(10) Go down a flight of steps on the right until you reach the junction with Governor’s Street.

(3) Return via the same route as on the way there until you reach (S/E).
