The Capitán Gorges

A circular tour through lush Andalusia, far from the crowds of the Costa del Sol. On the itinerary: the coolness of the Capitán Gorges, magnificent cork oaks, the tomb of El Capitán, the San José Mill, and a few harmless herds.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the CA9208 road, between El Cobre and Algeciras Prison.

(S/E) Take the forest track and, after 200m, go through the fence via a small gate on the right-hand side. Follow the Sendero Garganta del Capitán. Ignore a path on the right and then, further on, another on the left before reaching a three-way junction in the track.

(1) Turn left and follow the forest track for about 1 km, ignoring four turn-offs to the left. Continue until you reach another junction.

(2) Turn right and continue for 350 m to reach a small clearing. A sign points to the right towards “Llano del tumbas” (Plain of the Tombs).

(3) Turn right and walk for about 150 m to reach what appear to be rocks but are in fact burial sites.

(4) Return to the sign.

(3) Return to the original path to the right. Continue for about 200 m until you reach a junction.

(5) Turn left and follow the Arroyo de Botafuego to reach a water collection point, which marks the end of the path.

(6) Turn back and return to the fork.

(5) Continue straight ahead for about 350 m, then turn left at a 90° angle with the path.

(7) Take a small path on the right which leads, after 50 m, to the Capitan’s grave.

(8) Return to the fork.

(7) Resume the route to the right towards the river, which is reached quickly. Turn right to follow the bank of the Garganta del Capitán for about 400 m, then take a short detour to the right to reach the ruins of the San José Mill.

(9) Retrace your steps and take the path on the right which moves away from the river, leaves the wooded area to open out into the open and rejoins the three-way junction at the start.

(1) Continue to the left to return to the car park (S/E).
