Le Puy via Vieil Aiglun

This hike takes you through the old village of Aiglun, allows you to see an exhibition of fossilised leaves in the heart of nature, and finally offers a lovely view of the Bléone Valley, with all the mountain ranges surrounding Digne.

Description of the walk

A car park is signposted at the start of the walk, but there is little space: it is best to park at the town hall car park.

(S/E) Follow the road to the “P” sign / Haute-Provence Geological Reserve. Head up to the left onto a path, following the yellow markings. Although you’re on the edge of a housing estate, you’ll soon find yourself in the countryside, in the shade under the trees.

(1) Continue to the right and walk alongside the housing estate on your left. Just after this, turn onto the path on the right.
When you reach a flat area, walk past the Chapelle Saint-Jean (which you will see on the way back), turn right at the junction and head slightly downhill to reach a sandy area.

(2) Look out for the path on the left, which you will take on the way back, and continue straight on, starting to climb again. Pass an information board displaying fossils and carry on: some sections are steep but short, and the path climbs up to a lodge at the foot of the old village.

(3) Apart from the restored church, there is not much left of Old Aiglun. After going round the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine and its esplanade, follow the path across a small meadow and head straight up the stony track. Further up, the path levels out: go straight on, pass the high-voltage power line to reach the highest point of Le Puy and enjoy the view.

(4) Retrace your steps, pass under the high-voltage power line again, then leave the path you took on the way up and head off to the right. Follow a wide track for a few metres, then quickly turn south onto a small path which, after a short flat section, descends rapidly.

(5) Just before the junction shown on the IGN map with a path branching off to the right, do not take the path that descends to the left (this path is not marked on IGN maps but is visible on OSM). Continue straight on towards a flat section where the junction shown on the IGN map is not (or barely) visible.

On this flat area, start to change direction by heading left onto a very slight uphill section before continuing the descent. Some sections are steep but short, and the view opens up towards Vieil Aiglun. Continue descending; at a T-junction, turn left and, at the exit of a hairpin bend, descend to the left at the Y-junction. Pass through a barrier to finally reach a gate.

(6) Continue straight on towards the hamlet of Le Roux, where you’ll reach a tarmac road. Head down to the right.

(7) Turn left onto the Voie des Genêts, staying on a short stretch of tarmac.

(8) When you reach the last houses, head down through the trees on the right, following the yellow markings until you rejoin the path you took on the way there.

(2) Head up to the right, then keep right again to reach the Chapelle Saint-Jean. Continue straight on, heading downhill and passing the water station on your left. Join the path you took on the way up again and follow it in the opposite direction.

(1) Cut straight across to reach a small street which leads further on to Rue des Pitchounets. Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

(3) Toilets and water available in season at Sainte-Madeleine Church

Some sections are steep: sturdy footwear and walking poles will be very useful.

(4) The descent path for the return journey includes some fairly steep sections, so to return to the starting point, you can simply continue straight ahead to stay on the same path as on the way up.

Worth a visit

The first part of the walk features information boards created by the Haute-Provence Geopark (https://www.geoparchauteprovence.com) on the theme of local flora and geology

Chapelle Saint-Jean: ruins of the late 11th-century church

Exhibition of fossilised leaves

Nearly 15 million years ago, the sea receded and vegetation gradually took root in this area. In autumn, leaves that fell onto the sand—which has now turned to sandstone—became trapped and left their fossilised imprints on the rock.
A cloth and some water will help you clean the windows!

A lovely hike, and what’s more, the sun was shining brightly on this early May morning.
It all starts with a good climb that takes the whole morning. Once at the top, there’s a 360° view. Magnificent.
We can take some photos. We carry on a bit further, and then it’s time for a snack.
In the afternoon, we head back down to the village of Aiglun, then on to Mallemoisson (with a bit of road walking).
And we return to the starting point.
A lovely walk for the whole family (from 7 to 77 years old), though it is a bit of a workout.

Walk taken today, 4 July
Thanks to Franck for this walk, which was exactly what we needed today.
WEATHER: perfect. Sunny and 25°C.

DESCRIPTION: very well described. There are lots of twists and turns; it’s easier with the GPS track, but for those who prefer the written description, it’s flawless.
TERRAIN: usually just ordinary paths and tracks. But I can confirm the route creator’s warning: between 5 and 6, ‘Some sections are steep but short’. It should be noted that they are covered in pebbles, sometimes for a hundred metres or so. You therefore need to take your time, and walking poles are a great help. Suitable footwear is essential. I can’t quite imagine what it would be like in wet weather!

COVERAGE: you’re in the woods, though there are clearings that allow you to enjoy the scenery, especially the mountains to the east and south of Digne: Cheval Blanc, Couard, Cousson…

HIGHLIGHTS: apart from the old church at Aiglun, nothing. It alone, however, makes the hike worthwhile! It’s so pristine it looks as though the restoration was finished yesterday. It’s very imposing, with small windows and enormous buttresses. Take a look at the photos – it’s amazing!
The facilities are very comprehensive, with disabled access, well-maintained paths and even a semi-circular amphitheatre-style area where 10 or 20 people can sit and listen to a speaker! It’s a shame we found the door closed.

CONCLUSION: a 2- to 3-hour hike depending on your pace, with a reasonable but very real incline. With this church as a lovely bonus.

The start is a bit tricky to find: head to the car park at Aiglun town hall, then walk back along the road; after about 100 metres, you’ll find the path on your left. Most of the ‘Parc géo’ signs along the route have been worn away. The church has been beautifully restored but is closed. Lovely views of the mountains. Picnic tables.
The climb to the Pic du Puy is of no interest: a steep, unshaded path with no additional views at the summit!

This is an interesting route, particularly for exploring the beautiful, restored church in old Aiglun and the well-developed surrounding area, which offers plenty of places to eat in this lovely setting; however, the path leading there isn’t particularly interesting as it doesn’t take you through any lovely woods and is mainly lined with quite a few houses. We did, however, spot a deer.

The signposting is fine all the way to La Chapelle, which is stunning and has been fully restored. There are few signposts for the descent.
