The Puy de Sancy and the Cirque de la Fontaine Salée from Mont

A very varied route, with ridges, forest, a spring and, above all, exceptional views! A wild route with people at the summit of Puy de Sancy but no one else anywhere else.
Dogs are not allowed on this hike (even on a lead), located in the Chastreix-Sancy Nature Reserve (they are only allowed on a lead on the GR®30).

Description of the walk

Depart from the grass car park at the entrance to the hamlet of Le Mont.

(S/E) Follow the small road eastwards for about 1.5 km until you reach a crossroads.

(1) Take the track on the left until you reach a house (Les Lades).

(2) After the house, leave the track and take the path that descends to the left to a footbridge over the Gagne river, then arrive at a gate.

(3) After the gate (close it behind you), take the path on the right until you reach another junction. Continue along the path that climbs to the right until you enter a beech forest. The path becomes difficult to see, but it runs parallel to the barbed wire fence that marks the entrance to a field before leading to a forest track suitable for vehicles.

(4) Take the track on the right, enter a spruce forest and join the marked route that leads to the Fontaine Salée. After passing a ruin on your right, turn right and then left a hundred metres further on. At the next fork, turn right and you will soon reach the next one.

(5) Go left and you will reach a viewpoint and an information board at the edge of the woods.

(6) Continue along the path, crossing a bog that can be very wet, especially at the end of winter. You will come to a stream with a footbridge. The spring is located before the footbridge on your right. Please note that this may be the last water source before the summit of Puy de Sancy.

(7) Continue on the duckboards after the footbridge and join the white-red marked GR® trail.

(8) Turn left, crossing the fence (ladder). Climb up to reach a plateau with unobstructed views. Depending on the season, there may be herds of cows. Reach an area covered with large boulders at the foot of Puy Gros. Pay attention to identify the crossroads just after.

(9) Leave the marked trail and take the path on the left that climbs up the valley at the foot of Puy Gros, then to a pass until you reach the GR®30.

(10) Continue left and follow the balcony path to the Col de la Cabane.

(11) Keep left and, via a fairly steep final climb, reach the summit of Puy de Sancy.

(12) Continue on the other side via the steps (very slippery in frosty weather!) to Pas de l'Âne.

(13) Leave the descent to the cable car station and stay on the GR®30 on the left. Cross a series of steep passages (chains with a bit of a drop that can be daunting) and reach the Col de Courre.

(14) Leave the GR®30, which climbs back up to the ridges, and follow the path below. Reach the top of the slopes of the Chastreix-Sancy ski resort.

(15) Ignore the path that descends to the resort and continue left towards Mont Redon (the arrival point of a very steep ski lift).

(16) Descend opposite towards Roc de Courlande and arrive at its foot (you can reach the summit cross via a steep path).

(17) Turn left and follow the path that passes by the statues of the Virgin Mary before reaching a car park.

(18) Take the path on the left before the gate, cross a stream and continue along the mountainside until you reach a crossroads.

(19) Turn onto the path that descends until you reach the track you took on the way up.

(4) Take the same path as on the way there in the opposite direction until you reach the fork a few metres before the house at a place called Les Lades.

(2) Leave the route you took on the way there and follow the path on the right to the Terre d'Horizon gate (café open from 4pm to 8pm, weekends and in season).

(20) Ignore the path leading to the house and continue along the trail that descends gently to the Mont car park (S/E).
