Le Puy de Montoncel

For much of this route, it is clear why we are walking through the Bois Noirs, as the light sometimes struggles to penetrate the foliage. In other places, however, tree felling has opened up the view, and the number of logs stacked along the paths is impressive.

Description of the walk

The route is fully signposted in green. Note that the signposting consists only of crosses and horizontal bars; we did not see any ‘turn right’ or ‘turn left’ signs.

Park at Place de La Lizolle (bus stop), which can be reached via the D64 from Palladuc

(S/E) Set off along the road towards Palladuc (see the alternative route corresponding to our route). Ignore two roads on the left and leave the village.

(1) Turn right onto thefirst track on the right. When you reach a crossroads, take the left-hand track and head down to the lake, skirting it to keep it on your left.

(2) At the dam, continue straight on and climb up through the hamlet of Duzelier.

(3) After the hamlet, follow a path on the right which climbs up to the Croix Vieille. Continue along the road to Les Étivaux.

(4) The road becomes a stony track and climbs steadily up to the sources of the Credogne.

(5) At the 936m mark, turn left and pass the Roux farm.

(6) 200 m further on, take the path on the left and follow the fairly steep climb past the springs to reach the Col des Planchettes, where you join theGR® 3.

(7) Turn right onto the GR®. Cross a crossroads and continue straight on.

(8) At the next junction, leave theGR®, turn left and follow the path on the right, signposted: Col de Montoncel (see note below). At the crossroads, continue straight ahead.

(9) Turn right at the next junction. Continue downhill to the 1009m mark.

(10) Turn right and join a tarmac path that crosses Le Canelier. Once you reach the Route des Bois Noirs, continue to the right to return to the bus stop where you started (S/E).

Notes

This route corresponds to that described in sheet no. 12, “La Montagne thiernoise”, of the Livradois-Forez guide.

Alternative route: Turn left onto the small road towards the chapel, then turn right at the crossroads. Walk past the chapel (see photo) and rejoin the road to Palladuc.

After the (7), the signposting for the route to the Col de Montoncel is currently incorrect (June 2022) as logging work is blocking the way. To reach this pass, you must therefore continue to follow theGR® 3 to the junction at an elevation of 1170 metres and continue right onto theGR®3A.

The hike took 4½ hours (not including a lunch break with my 11-year-old son), and we extended the route to reach the summit of Puy de Montoncel by taking a path to the left before marker 9 (at the junction of several paths), taking care not to descend too far before reaching marker 9. The detour is well worth it for the view and makes up for the extra 80m climb.

At point 8, you’ll need to follow the GPS track as forestry work has covered the path and markings.
There’s a lovely reservoir and the small La Muratte dam; if you walk an extra 200 metres, you can reach the foot of the dam.

One small downside: this section is used by motocross bikes, quads and 4x4s, so stay alert

Very pleasant hike throughout the first part in the woods, a little more mixed feelings on the descent from Le Puy, which is on a very rough "track" ravaged by forestry machinery and runoff. The view in the distance is nice, but the desolate landscape of clear-cut forests all around takes away some of the magic.

It should be noted that the descent from No. 8 is quite dangerous.
(forestry vehicles + quad bikes + storm the day before, resulting in erosion + loose stones) all this on a steep slope with deep, slippery gullies).
Make sure you rest before attempting this descent, as it is very hard on the knees.
Otherwise, it's a beautiful ride...

A lovely walk, but 80% of the paths were in very poor condition (due to gully erosion and forestry work)

A lovely route, mostly through the woods, which is lovely when it’s hot.

I walked up to the summit and back, between points 8 and 9. It takes 10 minutes to climb up. There’s a lovely view over the Limagne plain and the Monts d’Auvergne.

A lovely route with magnificent views. The only downside is that the tour doesn’t go via Montoncel.
We did that ourselves to admire the magnificent view without making the route too long.
