The medieval bridge of Masselèbre

In the days of courtly love,
A bridge embraced the beloved Dore with its arches.
But the carefree beauty abandoned her bed.
The inconsolable, built of heavy stones,
frozen in the green grass, reaches out to the liberated beauty,
To the lively and joyful waters, shimmering,
So close and yet so inaccessible.

Description of the walk

In Masselèbre, park near the recycling bins and the tiny chapel.

(S/E) Facing the chapel door, walk along the left-hand side and then immediately turn onto a grassy path on the right, Chemin de Buges. You will come to a road, which you should follow to the right.

Blue markings

(1) At the fork in the road, turn left, following a blue arrow, and continue along the path.

(2) At the next intersection, turn left onto the path.

No markings

At the T-junction, leave the blue-markedPR®® and follow the path to the right. At the next junction, at the end of April, you will see a beautiful meadow covered with orchids and find the blue markings again.

Blue markings

Turn right to return to the junction you passed on the way there.

(2) Continue straight ahead and return almost to the intersection you passed on the way there.

(1) Continue straight ahead to reach the medieval bridge, which now spans only a thin stream of water.

(3) Cross the bridge and head straight towards the Dore. Take the footbridge and then, on the other side, turn left, keeping to the paths closest to the river, to enjoy its banks for about 250 metres.

(4) Retrace your steps and cross the medieval bridge again.

(3) Walk straight up the street to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Very easy walk, but comfortable shoes are recommended as the route follows paths and trails, and even crosses meadows.
I do not recommend the local meat producer who lets his dogs attack visitors while smiling!

This bridge, which probably dates from the 14th century, was built over the Dore River, which was later diverted further south. The bridge was then preserved to cross the leat of a mill that has since dried up, so that the bridge now stands in a meadow. The parapet was restored in the 20th century.

At the end of August, we had the pleasant surprise of discovering a meadow covered with orchids (marsh orchids).

The Dore is a pretty river. If the meadow is not occupied by horses, you can walk to a meadow with a pond and back.

A lovely walk to do with young children. A charming spot that made us want to have a picnic by the water.
