The Pont du Tarn via the hamlet of L'Hôpital

This hike will take you to the source of the Tarn. You will follow drovers' roads through the woods, cross the hamlet of L'Hôpital and its ruins, then follow the path winding through heather, pastures and granite rock formations to reach the Roman-style bridge over the Tarn.
Finally, you will walk along the Tarn with its clear water dotted with rocks emerging from the surface, offering the opportunity for a swim before heading back down to the starting point.

Description of the walk

To get to the start of this hike from the village of Le-Pont-de-Montvert, take the Vialas road (D998) for 1 km, then, just after the bridge, park on the right in the car park near Frutgères.

(S/E) Cross the bridge again, then take the path on the right, which is theGR®72(marked in white and red). You will come to a crossroads marked by a barrier.

(1) Take the path on the right, remembering to close the gate behind you. Continue along this path heading north-east until you reach the first building in the hamlet of La Veissière.

(2) Take the hairpin bend to the left to go around the back of the building. On the left, there is a stone staircase: climb it and rejoin the path a little higher up.
The path passes just above a wire-fenced kennel. Continue and ignore any paths leading downhill or marked with a cross. You will reach some pastures.

(3) Follow the fence on the left until you reach the tarmac road. Continue on this road to the right heading east, cross the hamlet of Villeneuve, then stay on this road until you reach the hamlet of L'Hôpital and cross it. At the crossroads with the road, join theGR®7.

(4) Turn right and follow it to the Tarn bridge.

(5) Cross this bridge, turn right and, a few metres further on, you will reach the junction of the twoGR® trails, the 7 and the 72. Leave theGR®7and turn right onto theGR®72. Follow the Tarn to reach a right-angled junction.

(6) Continue straight ahead until you reach a footbridge at the Col de l'Ancize.

(7) Cross the footbridge and continue along the path on the right (still theGR®72), which moves away from the stream. You will arrive at the hamlet of Merlet.
Keep to the right on theGR®, turn onto the first path on the left between the houses. TheGR® is marked with a sign.

(8) Continue straight ahead, following the stream to reach Frutgères. Cross the hamlet, following the road for 50 metres after the last house.

(9) On your right, youwill see a field with a large metal gate and theGR®72® sign. Go through the gate and close it behind you. Follow the path on the right to the car park (S/E).

Taken on a beautiful day, the Tarn bridge is charming and quite wild.

A route best enjoyed outside of the hottest hours of the day: there is little shade.

We did the circuit in the opposite direction.
The signs were good and we followed the Tarn river: it was magnificent.
We had a picnic by the water and dipped our feet in.
We had no trouble getting back up to the hamlet of L'Hôpital.
At L'Hôpital, we missed the trail and continued on the road to Villeneuve.
After Villeneuve, we found the trail to continue but it wasn't very clear.
We had a lot of trouble getting to La Veissière and then couldn't find any information on how to get to the finish bridge.
There were no signs, so we used our GPS to locate ourselves and turned back to find the right trail, which was poorly maintained with weeds, brambles and broom.
Finally, we arrived safely.
It's a very beautiful walk.
The locals prefer to do this hike the way we did.

A bit too much road at the end of the climb
Long, leg-breaking descent in the last half hour

A very beautiful, varied hike that passes through charming hamlets and runs alongside the River Tarn....
However, there was a slight problem shortly after setting off: we quickly found ourselves back on the road and couldn't see where we had gone wrong.

A very beautiful hike of moderate difficulty, not very busy at this time of year.

On the way back, after the hospital, we cut across the pastures to reach the Tarn and crossed it at Guet. It's much nicer than continuing along the wide, uninteresting track.
Then, after following the rocks along the Tarn for a while, again, rather than following the wide track (ugly and made even wider by forestry machinery), we followed a magnificent little path that runs alongside the Tarn and then a small tributary. It was like a Japanese garden stretching for several kilometres. Truly splendid.
