Description of the walk

Park at the church in: Le Pont-de-Montvert

(S/E) From the church, head towards the bridge over the Rieumalet (stream) without crossing it. Turn left onto Rue de la Jaillerie. Join theGR®70and follow the red and white markings due north to the hamlet of Finiels. A lovely climb to get your legs moving.

(1) Leave theGR® 70. At thesecond junction, turn right, passing in front of Maison Victoire towards the D20.

(2) At thethird junction, take the D20 on the right, heading towards the hamlet of Prat-Souteyran. Watch out for traffic.

(3) In the centre of the hamlet, before the farm, take the tarmac entrance on the left, then the track between the white shed and the wall. This track has not been used for a long time. As you climb, keep the stone wall and the fence on your right as a landmark. At the top: in front of you is a fence that you must not cross, and a power line (not shown on the map). Keep strictly to the left, keeping the fence on your right. Look out for the hamlet and a recently installed mobile phone mast. Join the path above the mast and head towards Montgros.

(4) Cross the hamlet, ignore the track on the right as you leave the hamlet and follow the track on the left. Cross the Ruisseau de Gratte Pourcel over a stone bridge. Continue along this track to the hamlet of Le Cros.

(5) Continue along the same track and cross the small bridge before the hamlet of Salarial.

(6) This time, rejoin theGR® 7. Turn right and continue along thisGR®. Recent signposts will guide you easily. You can climb up to the hamlet – former Commandery of the Knights of Malta. Continue along theGR® 7until you cross the Pont du Tarn, then turn right until you meet anotherGR®.

(7) Now turn right onto theGR®72. Follow the Tarn for about 2.8 km until you reach another junction ofGR® andPR® trails (elevation 1297).

(8) At this junction of tracks and paths, continue south-west along theGR®72. Pass the Col de l’Ancise (altitude 1,240 m) and head for Le Merlet and the lodge.

(9) Turn left immediately after the entrance to the lodge. The descent is steep down to Frutgères. The trail is marked but the rain has washed out the path. Take extra care.

(10) Cross the hamlet; at the exit, take thefirst track on the right, still following theGR®72. When you reach the D998, turn right (watch out for vehicles). Cross the bridge over the Tarn and take thefirst track on the right. From here, theGR® route has been altered; keep a close eye on the markings. 25 m after the bridge, turn left up a steep climb to the road. Turn right onto it, go 200 m and follow the markings and signs.

(11) At the junction of the track and the road, turn left towards Pont de Monvert, still following the GR®.
Leave the temple on your left and take Rue du Closelet. Cross the bridge over the Rieumalet and return to your starting point (S/E).

Notes

I recommend setting off early if it is hot and wearing high-top shoes and trousers, as you will be crossing areas with plenty of broom as well as fords and wetlands.

Between points (9) and (11), you are in a protected area. No camping or fires.

You can find water in the hamlets of Montgros, Le Cros, Salarial or L’Hôpital by asking the locals.

Throughout the route, there are gates (Passadous in Occitan); please close them behind you.

Worth a visit

The peaceful landscape resembles that of Scotland or Brittany.
Numerous granite megaliths, broom.

Flora and fauna

You can swim in the Tarn between (10) and (11).

A superb hike in glorious weather: plenty of lovely views and a walk through charming, traditional hamlets. The route is very quiet, so there’s a lot of grass and branches on some sections. No particular difficulties

Varied and magnificent landscapes. Charming hamlets that feel as though they’re the only ones in the world.
We went hiking under a slightly grey sky, which was just as well as the route is quite exposed.
In the first section (we set off from the Ferme du Merlet – a lovely hamlet where we were staying), the route is busy as it’s part of the GR, but after passing through Finiels, we found ourselves on our own.
You do need to be well-booted, though, as we followed the GPS track of a less well-maintained path; the grass is very tall and we were walking through wet areas where it was hard to see where we were putting our feet.
Then, after passing through some beautiful hamlets, we rejoined the GR trail leading to the Pont du Tarn, and there too, there were quite a few people.
We didn’t find the route particularly difficult: the elevation changes are manageable, apart perhaps from the distance in kilometres (25 km for us) as the signposting differs from the IGN map, but you can’t get lost – everything is clearly marked.

Hello, a lovely hike starting from Pont-de-Montvert – a beautiful, peaceful climb up to Finiel, passing through some charming hamlets. Just one minor issue at stage 3 of the hike: the narrow path between the white shed and the wall – further up, you end up with your feet in the water. The little stream flows all over the place and you can’t see it through the tall grass.

Good evening, m30,

Thank you for your feedback and for sharing this route, and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I’m wondering about the difficulty rating – perhaps because it’s over 20km?

A lovely walk – I didn’t find it difficult at all, so why is it rated as difficult (perhaps because of the distance or elevation gain?) Beautiful scenery and typical hamlets – I’d recommend it
