The heritage of Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin and Saint-Ouen-sur-Morin

Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin has seen music hall stars, singers and comedians pass through its various cafés and hotels. Saint-Ouen-sur-Morin offers a more noble past with the ruins of La Brosse Castle. This walk will allow you to immerse yourself in life as it once was, imagining the lively parties hosted by the owner of the Auberge de l’Œuf Dur et de l’Amour, or the lives of the village lords and popular traditions. Along the way, nature flourishes in all its splendour, offering travellers a true delight for the senses and the soul.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park on Avenue Daniel Simon, next to the town hall.

(S/E) Leave the car park, turn right to cross the bridge over the Petit Morin, walk past the church and go up Rue Eugène Daumont to the Stop sign.

(1) Cross straight ahead and go down Rue Verte, then, after the Stop sign, take Promenade Pierre Mac Orlan. Cross the bridge and arrive in Archets.

(2) Turn left, pass the Maison Mac Orlan and leave the village to reach the Tête d'Aliborron at the second path on the right.

(3) Turn right onto Sente des Closeaux and head up to Route des Vieilles Vignes. Turn right into Les Armenats (a sign explains the reason for the donkey’s head at the bottom of the path). Walk through Les Armenats to its exit and the junction with a stony path.

(4) Head slightly left. Ignore the turn-offs to the left and right and continue up to the hamlet of La Meresse, where you’ll rejoin a hard-packed track.

(5) Turn right onto this hard-packed track and immediately turn right towards the Mare de la Méresse. Then take the farm track “from La Méresse to L’Hermitière”, which starts to the right of La Méresse farm.

(6) Walk down the street in l'Hermitière, then head up Rue de la Source on the left until you reach a junction.

(7) Turn right into Rue des Meulières, pass the restaurant and take “Chemin Hazard” on the right, a sunken track that leads straight down to the Saint-Cyr cemetery (be careful when crossing the road).

(8) Walk alongside the cemetery, pass the technical workshops and take, on the left, a small path leading to the cemetery entrance (feel free to visit). Turn right onto Rue de l’Isolement, then immediately left onto Rue Lucien Devos and continue to Rue du Chemin.

(9) Turn right onto this road. At the end of the street, turn left onto Chemin de l'Ouche, then right onto Route de Saacy, which runs alongside the outbuildings of Château de la Brosse. Continue to the Stop sign.

(10) Cross Route de la Vallée and take the narrow lane, Allée Tournante. Continue to Petit Morin, turn right, follow the stream and then cross the sports grounds on the right to reach Chemin de la Fontaine; follow this to the left to reach a wash house and its spring.

(11) Enter the educational woodland and walk around it, following the footpath which climbs up to the Chemin des Sablons; follow this to the crossroads.

(12) Leave the War Memorial on your right and turn left onto Avenue Daniel Simon. Continue towards the centre of Saint-Cyr, pass the town hall and, on your right, you will find the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The high street of St Cyr, with its cul-de-sacs and enclosed courtyards,
The Maison des Têtes, by the sculptor Auguste Armand.
The Auberge de l’Oeuf dur et de l’Amour.
The bridge and the old mill on the Petit Morin.
The Maison Mac Orlan (for visits, contact the Musée des Pays de Seine-et-Marne at the entrance to St-Cyr)

The home of Frédéric Gérard, known as Fredé, in the hamlet of Les Armenats: host of the Lapin Agile in Montmartre, he comes to the countryside to look after his sheep and his donkey Lolo, who is set to become a star: indeed, Roland Dorgelès and a few friends had the donkey paint a picture with his tail, and the press hailed the artist for this abstract work.
La Méresse and its pond, peaceful beneath the sun’s rays and the surrounding vegetation. Barely noticeable at first glance, it nevertheless harbours many of nature’s mysteries and wonders.
The Auberge de l’Hermitière, originally a millers’ canteen,
The cemetery of St-Cyr, and its illustrious figures to discover.
The Château de la Brosse, of which only the roofs are visible,
The banks of the Petit Morin, the St-Ouen wash house and its spring, and a visit to the educational woodland.

A fairly short and pleasant hike. A bit of tarmac at the start, then a climb through the woods and beautiful scenery at the top when you reach La Meresse. At the end, from the cemetery, there's a bit more tarmac, but that's inevitable when you start and finish in a village with a population of nearly two thousand (loop).

The footpath isn’t well maintained and there are lots of trees blocking the way. A very warm welcome at L’auberge de l’oeuf dur. Picnic tables near the car park at the start of the trail.
