The Pas de Cinq Sous and the Crêtes de Musan

A lovely hike via the Pas de Cinq Sous, the ridges of the Montagne de Musan and back via the Ravin de l'Écalon. A peaceful route, mostly in the shade.

Description of the walk

Park at the Passage du Tour car park, just before or just after the start of the hike depending on which direction you’re coming from.

(S/E) Take the forest track running more or less parallel to the access road to the car park, following the sign for "Pré de Cinq Sous": the start is a gentle climb, which then becomes steeper. The first hour on the track isn’t particularly interesting, but the ridge walk that follows is more enjoyable.

(1) Leave the track and take a path on the right, following three consecutive hairpin bends.

(2) Once at the third hairpin, leave the path leading to the Col des Marchands on your left and continue straight on.

(3) Carry on straight ahead again to reach the Pré de Cinq Sous.

(4) Turn right onto the path that climbs straight up towards the overhanging cliff and joins it at the Pas de Pourceau.

(5) Turn right and follow the ridge of the Montagne de Musan towards the Pas de la Pierre. You’ll come out onto the tarmac road leading to the Rocher de Chantemerle telecoms relay station; follow it to the right for about fifty metres.

(6) Leave the road and rejoin the path on the left. Continue along the ridge to Pas de l'Aulagnier.

(7) A sign reads “Difficult”: perhaps a slight exaggeration, but the start is quite steep through the leaves. Best avoided after rain. Reach the junction of the Véreires paths.

(8) Continue straight ahead. The path follows the ridge of Montagne du Sey for a short while, then turns left to descend into the Ravin de l'Écalon and eventually reaches Champ Riant.

(9) Continue to the right along a stony path between the mountain pastures, and return to the Passage du Tour car park (S/E)

Make sure you’re wearing suitable footwear for the steep descent at the start via the Pas de l’Aulagnier.

Worth a visit

Stunning views over the Isère plain from Saint-Marcellin to Romans and beyond from the Pré de Cinq Sous. Views of the inner Vercors from the ridges. And of course, for those who haven’t been there before, the beautiful village of Beauregard-Baret.

A lovely walk with some beautiful views. We did it in the opposite direction, and I think that might be a bit tougher but actually easier, as the descent at the Pas de l'Aulagnier can be dangerous because it’s slippery and very steep (don’t attempt it after rain). That’s really the only difficult bit. Thanks for this lovely route

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views along the ridges. Very shaded except for the section leading to Pas de Pourceau (sections 4-5), so be prepared. Very pleasant forest passages after the Télécom relay station. As already mentioned, I highly recommend using walking sticks for the descent from Pas de l'Aulagnier. When we were there, the ground was dry, but the slope and the amount of leaves still made it tricky. If the ground had been wet, I imagine some people would have ended up on their backsides. Apart from that, no particular difficulties. The hike took 5 hours and 25 minutes with good breaks, in line with the usual estimates on Visorando.

A lovely walk
The descent from Pas de l'Aulagnier is steep and slippery after rainy weather.

A lovely walk with magnificent views over the Rhône and Isère plains and the eastern range of the Vercors (Grande Moucherolle, Grand Veymont).
Please note: bring walking poles for the descent at Pas de l'Aulagnier (steep, wet, leaves, mud).
