The Permanent Trail in Schweighouse-sur-Moder

Access to car park

From Haguenau, follow signs for Schweighouse-sur-Moder and take the Route de Schweighouse (D919). In Schweighouse, follow signs for Pfaffenhoffen. Stay on Rue du Général de Gaulle for 800 metres, then turn right onto Rue des Sports, where you will find the Robert Kaeufling Cultural and Sports Centre.

Blue Ring Markings

(S/E) Start at the north-west of the car park and follow the Blue Ring markings. Walk up Rue des Sports and turn right onto the tarmac path that goes around the sports ground.

(1) At the intersection with the Moder, turn right. A few metres further on, take the small bridge on the left to cross the Moder.

(2) After the bridge, turn right to walk between the Moder and the edge of the forest. 150 metres further on, turn left to enter the Haguenau forest via the Chemin forestier Moder. At the fork, keep left and continue along the path for about 2.5 km, ignoring the paths on the right and left. The path branches off to the right before leading to the Uberach forest road.

(3) Turn right onto the Uberach forest road, then immediately left after the railway line. Continue straight ahead for about 500 m, cross a wide lane and continue straight ahead until you reach an intersection.

(4) At the intersection between plots 1031, 1032, 1093 and 1094, turn right. At the next junction, turn left at a 90° angle and continue straight ahead for about 250 m until you reach a junction.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right for a few dozen metres, then turn right again to join the Chemin Forestier de la Longue Tranchée.
Stay on this path for about 1.5 km, ignoring the paths on the right and left. The path leads to the Uberach forest road (tarmac cycle path).

(6) Turn left, then cross the bridge over the Zinsel du Nord. After about 700 m, the Route forestière d'Uberach branches off to the right.

(7) Gradually leave the forest along the railway line and return to Schweighouse via the industrial and commercial area. At the end of the road, turn left to cross the railway line, then immediately right to follow Rue de la Zinsel.

(8) At the end of the street, turn right twice in succession to reach Rue de la Papeterie (D85) and cross the railway line again. Continue to the roundabout, then keep right to go down Rue de la Gare. Cross the Zinsel du Nord and then the Moder, which converge about 150 m further east, and continue straight ahead to the traffic lights.

(9) At the intersection with Rue du Général de Gaulle, continue straight ahead and then take the^first street on the right (Rue des Juifs). Follow this street to the end, ignoring the side streets on the right and left.

(10) At the stop sign, turn right onto Rue du Maréchal Leclerc before turning left onto Rue du Général de Gaulle. Finally, after about 100 metres, turn right onto Rue des Sports to return to Espace Kaeufling (S/E).

Don't forget to pick up a tourist map of the Haguenau Forest d'Exception®, available at the Haguenau Tourist Office, which shows the plot numbers marked on the trees at intersections. This makes it very easy to find your way around the undivided forest!

After crossing the railway line at the Uberach forest road and turning left between plots 1031 and 1032, you will walk through the Stocklach integral biological reserve.
Integral biological reserves are protected areas where foresters no longer intervene. They are veritable laboratories for studying the natural evolution of forest stands. In this case, studies are being conducted on nearly 40 hectares to examine the natural evolution of the forest following the storm of 1999.

The Zinsel du Nord, which you will encounter twice during this walk, just like the Moder, is 43 km long. This river has its source in the Pays de Bitche. Its meandering course is due to the gentle relief of the Haguenau Forest and is a source of biodiversity: the meanders slow down the flow of water, allowing it to infiltrate the water table more easily.
