Mouton Park from Langevin

Langevin is best known for its river. However, there are several trails that allow you to walk circular routes through the sugarcane fields. This walk takes you round the Papangues and Lambert peaks, passing through the village of Parc Mouton. When the sugarcane is cut, the views take in the whole of the ‘Sud Sauvage’ and the southern slopes of the Piton de la Fournaise massif, as well as the heights of Saint-Joseph.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Langevin multi-service centre.

(S/E) Join the main road again and follow it to the left, taking Rue Voltaire on the same side until you reach the junction by the chapel.

(1) Turn sharp right onto Chemin Terrain Galet. It soon leads into the reeds and passes close to Piton Lambert. It is marked on maps as a wide tarmac road, but it very quickly turns into a very stony track after the first hairpin bend. Keep going straight ahead on the stony track until you reach the hairpin bend.

(2) Pass this final hairpin, then turn left and you’ll reach a tarmac road.

(3) Keep left onto a road that’s completely bumpy and resembles a track. Navigate three hairpin bends to reach some orchards and a track.

(4) Carry on straight ahead and take the right-hand bend. Continue straight on until you reach the school at Parc Mouton.

(5) Carry on straight ahead. Pass three small lanes/paths on the right and two on the left. At the fifth junction, keep left and cross the stream until you reach the departmental road.

(6) Go up this road and turn right until you reach the first track. Follow this track downhill to the path. Follow the path until you reach a house.

(7) Walk down the street and, at the end, keep left onto Rue des Foulards. Keep to the right at all times to rejoin the departmental road.

(8) Cross over and take the Chemin de Ligne opposite. You’ll pass a wayside shrine.

(9) Keep to the right and carry on straight ahead, level with the road, until you reach the orchards and the path you took on the way there.

(4) Head down to the left until you reach the tarmac road.

(3) Follow this road to the left. Ignore all tracks branching off to the right and left until you reach a concrete path.

(10) Follow it down to the junction.

(11) Head straight ahead. Carry on in the same direction until you reach a large building on the left, amongst the reeds.

(12) Pass it and head down a track to the left, through the tall grass. Follow the road that continues from there to reach the A-road.

(13) Follow it to the right back to the starting point. Take care, as it’s a fast road. (S/E).

A lovely walk, alternating between rain and sunshine, taking in the hills and market gardens, banana plantations – many of the banana trees having been snapped by the hurricane – sugar cane, and lots of birds: weavers, rose-billed parakeets and cardinals… some lovely flowers too; a very idyllic outing – I loved it
