Chemin de l'Ile Park, Promenade Bleue and Lagravère Park

An urban route from station to station with a water theme! After crossing Parc du Chemin de l'Ile with its many ponds, follow the towpath along the Seine. Two detours into Parc Lagravère complete the picture.

Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Nanterre-Ville station.
- RER - Line A, on the section between Paris and Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
Take exit 1 Boulevard de la Seine.

On the Promenade Bleue, along the Seine, as well as in the public parks you pass through, you will find numbered markers. They are indicated in the description as B1, etc.

Without markings

(S) When leaving the station, continue for a few metres and then turn left onto Boulevard de la Seine, preferably on the right-hand pavement. At the stop sign, cross Avenue de la République and continue for a few metres. Then turn right, cross a small square and then a park, leaving a playground on your left. Exit the park on the right by going up a staircase and rejoin Avenue de la République. Cross Rue Faidherbe and walk along a car park on your left.

(1) At the traffic lights, cross Rue Becquet and enter Parc Hoche (chicane) opposite. N.B. The paths in this park, created above the A86 tunnel, are not shown on the map. Go straight ahead on a wide concrete path, passing a skateboard park on your left. Note the Nanterre mosque on the other side of the street on the right and, at the next fork, turn left. At the next intersection, turn sharply left, pass a playground on your right and exit the park (chicane). Cross the avenue at the pedestrian crossing, turn right and cross a street on the left.

Yellow markings (rare)

(2) At the traffic lights, cross Avenue Hoche and follow it to the left. Cross a one-way street on the right and, after about 50 metres, you will reach the entrance to Chemin de l'Ile park. Enter the park and go straight ahead on a cement path. At the end, you will see a metal casing with a screw conveyor for transporting water. Turn left and follow a wide concrete path alongside the ponds on your left (see variations in the practical information). Pass a second screw conveyor and you will come to a third one with a yellow marker on the casing.

No markings

(3) Two wide gravel paths branch off to the right: follow the right-hand path, which is more perpendicular, between two clusters of conifers and with a rubbish bin on the right-hand side (see photo). Pass under the A14 bridge, continue straight ahead and pass under the railway bridge.

At the fork immediately after, turn left onto a cement path. Walk along a river on a wooden pontoon (closed in winter, in which case stay on the lawn). Climb a staircase (B5) and, at the T-junction, follow the gravel path you left earlier to the left. Go around the Jardin des Touradons (small ponds) on the right and exit the park.

Yellow markings (rare)

(4) Take the towpath on the right towards Colombes. Walk along the Seine on your left and the allotments on your right. Pass under another railway bridge (Pont des Anglais on the map) and continue along the towpath towards Parc Lagravère. At a junction (signpost, "Eco River Parc" sign, Rue des Peupliers on the map), take advantage of a pontoon on the left for a beautiful view.

Continue along the towpath. After about 250 metres, at a fork, the left-hand path runs closest to the Seine before joining the main path, but it should only be used when the river is not in flood! Further on, pass under the Pont de Bezons bridge (railings). Ignore all the steps on the right and continue along the towpath. Walk along a low concrete wall on the left and pass a marker (B55).

No markings

(5) Leave the towpath and turn right into Parc Lagravère. Pass a ping-pong table on your right and turn left onto a wide, stabilised path. At the T-junction (not shown on the map), turn left and stay on the main path. At a fork (B5), turn left. Pass a small brick building on your right (map on the left), ignore the paths branching off to the sides and pass marker 7.

(6) At a signpost, turn left. At the immediate junction (toilets on the right), continue straight ahead, go down a staircase and continue along a path. At the end, first turn left then right onto a small footbridge and walk along a playground on your left. At the "Aire de jeux" sign, turn right onto a footbridge and cross a reed bed. Then turn left and pass under two small wind turbines. At the end of the path, turn left and go straight ahead to exit the park.

Yellow markings (rare)

Find the towpath and follow it to the right for about 700 metres.

No markings

(7) Enter Parc Lagravère again on the right. Immediately pass a playground on your right, turn left and pass a second playground on your right. Ignore a path on the right and pass a small brick building on the right-hand side (water point on the left-hand side). At the crossroads (signpost), turn left, pass a rock engraved with "Ile Marante" on your right and leave the park for the last time.

Follow the towpath to the right (ignore the yellow arrow pointing to the left). After passing a kind of cistern and just before the Pont de Colombes bridge, follow a wide gravel path to the right and walk alongside a building on your left. Pass a chicane and you will come to a crossroads (former water pumping station on the left, A86 bridge opposite).

Yellow markings

(8) Go around the crossroads on the left: pass at the foot of the pumping station, cross Avenue Kléber, pass under the motorway bridge and continue along Rue Paul Bert, preferably staying on the left-hand pavement. Cross Rue François Faber and then walk along the left-hand side of the Stade Yves du Manoir. Cross Boulevard Pierre de Coubertin and then Avenue Audra.

(9) At the next intersection, turn left onto Rue de la Reine Henriette. Cross Rue Gay Lussac and walk along the college of the same name on your right. At the end of the street, turn right and, after a few dozen metres, cross a small square on your left and walk past the Théâtre de Colombes. Climb a staircase and then follow Rue Saint-Denis on your left. At the traffic lights, cross Boulevard de Valmy.

No signposts

Continue straight ahead on Rue Saint-Denis, which has become a pedestrian street, ignoring all the side streets. This will take you to Colombes station, the entrance to which is located under the railway bridge (E).

To return home:
- Transilien - Line J, towards Paris-Saint-Lazare or towards Ermont-Eaubonne, Gisors or Mantes-la-Jolie via Conflans-Sainte-Honorine.

I did the walk today in lovely spring sunshine; it was very pleasant, even though 70% of the route runs alongside the Seine. I finished up at the small Museum of Art and History in Colombes, which is just before the station (free admission). Two quick notes:
1. “At the crossroads (signpost), turn left, pass a rock engraved with ‘Ile Marante’ on your right and leave the park one last time.” Actually, no: you can only see the engraving on the rock if you take a few steps in the wrong direction!
2. “Continue along Rue Paul Bert, preferably staying on the left-hand pavement.” In fact, the right-hand pavement is better, as it allows you to see, at No. 6, a magnificent Art Deco building with three bas-reliefs on the façade and a large African-inspired statue (Germain Dorel, architect, 1932–1933 – sculptor unknown).

A pleasant route, especially along the well-maintained banks of the Seine and the pedestrian shopping street at the end.

Knowing the blue walk from Colombes to Rueil-Malmaison, it was great fun to do this hike in the opposite direction.
It is very busy, so it is best to avoid weekends, and at this time of year, it is advisable to go in the afternoon to avoid the sun in your eyes, for better visibility and visual comfort.

A very pleasant walk along the Seine with beautiful views of the river (especially from the pontoon marked 4) and a few surprises such as the sheep pen and donkey between the motorway and railway bridges.
Please note that Lagravère Park closes at 5pm in winter (to be updated in the practical information section), and the park attendants start asking walkers to leave from 4.30pm onwards.
It would be good to find another route in Colombes to reach Rue St Denis. Crossing the square under the A86 motorway is particularly dangerous: despite the green lights for pedestrians, motorists do not stop and drive at high speed to reach the motorway. Furthermore, the avenue along the Yves du Manoir stadium is difficult to walk along due to cars parked on the pavements and pedestrian crossings.
The end of the route, however, on the pedestrianised and shopping Rue Saint Denis, is very pleasant.

Our walk was cut short halfway through because of the flooding of the Seine, which forced us to walk along the noisy A86 motorway and a bit of the industrial area! It's amazing how nature can act as a noise barrier. We'll do it again in the spring when the weather is nicer.
