The Mur Païen and the ‘Sentier des Merveilles’ circular walk starting from Ottrott

A lovely walk through the Ottrott Forest with beautiful views and the chance to explore the ruins of the castles of Lutzelbourg, Rathsamhausen, Koepfel and Hagelschloss. Pass through the North Gate of the Mur Païen and enjoy a lovely stretch along the Sentier des Merveilles. Although the walk is classified as ‘moderate’, it should be noted that there are a few fairly steep ascents and descents.

Description of the walk

(S/E) With your back to the car park, follow the road for a few metres to the left, then take the path branching off to the right towards the Route des Châteaux. At the junction, follow the path on the left, keeping an eye on the markings.

(1) Take the hairpin bend onto the path on the right, which curves to the right before reaching a junction.

(2) Follow the path to the left and, a little further on, you’ll come to a house opposite which stand the ruins of the castles of Lutzelbourg and Rathsamhausen.

(3) Walk past the house and follow the path which climbs to the left, leading to another junction. From here, you can take a 100-metre round trip to the ruins of Koepfel Castle, of which only a few rocks remain, but which offers a lovely view.

(4) Continue along the path climbing towards Hagelschloss Castle until you reach a junction with a track branching off to the left.

(5) Follow this path, which climbs quite steeply, to reach the ruins of Hagelschloss Castle. Continue on and, after the bend to the left, you’ll come to a junction where several paths meet.

(6) Continue along the path straight ahead towards the North Gate of the Mur Païen, and head towards it.

(7) Follow the path that veers diagonally to the left and, after a short descent, leads to a junction with the Sentier des Merveilles.

(9) Turn left and follow the path to the hairpin bend.

(10) Continue down the path opposite, towards Ottrott-le-Haut. You’ll reach a junction.

(11) Cut across the forest track to rejoin the Yellow Cross on the opposite side and reach Ottrott-le-Haut.
