Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Stade Louis Gillet, located at the bottom of the village of Margencel.

Signposts are provided at major junctions.

Red and yellow markings (GRP® Littoral du Léman)

(S/E) Leave the car park via the vehicle exit, turn left and walk between two football pitches. Then head down a wide stony path. At a signpost, turn right and cross a stream. At the T-junction, follow a pleasant path to the left between a fenced-off meadow on the left and a hedge on the right.

(1) At the signpost for “Ronsuaz”, go straight on towards Pré Pochat and walk alongside a cowshed on your right. Continue along a tarmac lane and walk straight through the hamlet of Ronsuaz (with the wash house on your left). At the Stop sign (wooden cross), cross a main road (Route de Ronsuaz) and follow it to the right, keeping to the good pavement on the left.

(2) At the next stop sign, use the two successive pedestrian crossings to follow the Route des Cinq Chemins towards Moulin Pinget. Immediately turn left onto the Route du Moulin Pinget and head downhill. Cross a small stream and head back uphill.

(3) Pass by the foot of Moulin Pinget and go under the leat that carried water to its wheel (still visible on the right). Then note the sawmill on the right, which was powered by the mill’s wheel. Ignore a small road on the left and continue towards Port de Sciez.

(4) Shortly afterwards, at the end of a shaded section, turn left onto a shaded path (the purple line intended to represent theGRP® on the 1:25,000 map is not up to date here). Climb gently, then, in open country, wind your way through the meadows. Cross the Route des Plantées and continue straight ahead along a stony path, passing a cowshed on the right. Climb gently and note the Signal des Voirons ahead and, on the right, Lake Geneva and the Jura Mountains.

No signposting

(5) At the “Les Longeraies” signpost, follow a small road to the left (let theGRP® head off to the right). Note the Châteaux d’Allinges opposite (more to the left) and, in the background, the Mémises-Borée-Oche massif. Enter Jouvernex and, at the Stop sign (with a wayside shrine on the left), go straight on towards Margencel and cross the hamlet (several beautiful houses).

(6) At the end of the street, go round the roundabout and its central fountain on the right to cross the D233 at the pedestrian crossing. Then follow the D233 to the left towards Séchex. Please note: the road is busy; it is recommended that you stay on the right-hand verge, which is wider than the left. As you come out of the right-hand bend, turn right onto a farm track. When this turns right, continue straight on along a grassy path, leaving farm buildings on your right. Head downhill and, at the bottom, cross a small river via a footbridge.

(7) As you leave the footbridge, turn right and walk past the ruins of Moulin Rieux on your left. At the three-way junction that appears immediately, turn left (old yellow arrow) and walk past a beautiful old house on your right. Continue along a small road. At the end, rejoin the D233 and follow it to the right along its right-hand verge, which offers better visibility than the left-hand side (caution: busy road). Pass a bus stop and return to a junction you passed on the way out.

Red and yellow markings

(2) Follow the Route de Ronsuaz to the right, using the good pavement on the right-hand side. At the wooden cross, turn left onto Rue du Lavoir. Head uphill and walk straight through the hamlet of Ronsuaz.

(1) Continue straight on along the path between a hedge on the left and a fenced-off meadow on the right. At the shaded junction, turn right. Then turn left, head uphill, and pass between the two football pitches to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

Good walking shoes are sufficient for this short hike, which takes place on well-maintained paths or tarmac.

A few drinking fountains along the way.

Warning:
On two occasions, between the hamlets of Jouvernex and Ronsuaz, the route follows the D233, which is a busy road. Caution and care are required on these sections.

A detailed map is useful (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

Hike completed by the author on 4 August 2022.

Worth a visit

- Beautiful views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding peaks.
- Moulin Pinget (3).
- The pretty hamlet of Jouvernex, before (6).
- Moulin Rieux (7).

A very pleasant walk on Sunday under beautiful sunshine accompanied by birdsong. Few people. The signage is clear and visible. The Pinget mill is magnificent, carefully restored. We encountered only one slightly muddy section (at the end of the route) before the footbridge leading to the Rieux mill, probably due to brush clearing and improvements to the footpath. After the footbridge, there is indeed a ruin on the left and a splendid building slightly higher up on the right. The Rieux mill is said to be the renovated house (information provided by people present at the site).

We completed this walk by adding the short circular loop between Margencel and Mésinges. To do this, we set off from Mésinges to Margencel, followed the suggested route, and returned to Mésinges via the forest. Very well explained, this route is lovely, offering beautiful views of the surrounding peaks and the lake, as well as the chance to explore the mills, one of which has recently been restored and still has a working wheel. What’s more, the charming village of Jouvernex showcases some beautiful traditional houses.
Thank you for these discoveries.
