Description of the walk

To reach the starting point of this walk from Montauban, head via the Pont de Chaumes and continue along the Route de Saint-Martial (D8). Then turn left onto the Route du Clos Maury and, at the end, turn right onto the Chemin de Maury-Raffine.
The starting point is at the end of the Chemin de Maury-Raffine, where a map of the surrounding walks is on display.

(S/E) Head towards the forest on the right (south-east) and walk for about 200 metres. Cross a footbridge over a stream. Cross an open area under a power line and continue straight on.

(1) Turn left opposite the houses. The path leads down to a stream. Then turn right and follow the stream. After about 200 metres, you’ll emerge from the woods, cross a road and arrive at the foot of a slope – this is the reservoir.

(2) Head up the road to the left. At the top, in front of a house, turn right. Walk along the lake for about a hundred metres and turn left onto a path that climbs into the woods. You’ll come out into a field; go round it to the left, passing a house and some trees. Head into the small wood and then cross a stream next to a pond.

(3) At the T-junction, turn left and pass under a power line. Follow the path through the woods. You’ll come to a stony path coming from the right; continue straight on, heading downhill. Then turn left, following the path, cross a stream and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The path is very muddy at (1) after a downpour.

At (2), you can climb the slope in front of you to reach the lake’s dam. To rejoin the path, simply head back to the left, walking along the dam, then turn right onto the path that runs alongside the lake. Then follow the instructions in the description.

It is also possible to head down to the lakeside by continuing along the path that runs alongside the lake and taking one of the paths on the right; then return the way you came and follow the directions again.

Worth a visit

Take the time to read the information boards and listen to the birds in the forest. You can also walk down to the lake.

A short, very easy walk, with plenty of alternative routes to choose from. Pleasantly shaded in summer, it can be quite muddy and a bit slippery in places after heavy rain. It’s also a popular spot for walking and bathing dogs.

We visited this lovely little spot in the late afternoon on a Monday whilst lockdown restrictions were being eased, so we did come across a few people, but the route wasn’t exactly busy. Perhaps under different circumstances it’s a place popular with locals and therefore quite busy?
Otherwise, it’s a pleasant, shaded path through the woodland, with a few water sources.
There’s the option to follow other signposted trails and so extend the walk!
All along the trail there are also information boards about the local flora and fauna, which are interesting for young and old alike.
My partner wasn’t very lucky and was literally besieged by midges (at least fifteen of them!) all along the way

/!\ There are quite a few houses towards the end of the trail, so please be mindful of the peace and quiet of the area and its residents /!\

Pros:
- mostly shaded
- the countryside near Montauban
- opportunity to explore other signposted trails nearby
- information boards on flora and fauna

Cons:
- may be very busy at certain times of year?

The advantage is that you can choose longer circular loops.
At the starting point, there is a map showing the various routes.
At a place called RIVAYROLS: in the distance, there is a view of the unfinished church at Léojac.
