The Rochefort-en-Yvelines eight

A circular hike around Rochefort-en-Yvelines. The first circular loop goes north-west into the Bois de Rochefort and then returns to the town centre with a view of the cemetery and the Church of Saint-Gilles-et-de-l'Assomption. The second circular route goes around the village to the south and then east, reaching the Gloriette (river) before temporarily rejoining the route from the first part. The return journey is again through the Bois de Rochefort to reach the starting point at the Carrefour de Luynes. An ideal circular route in May with lily of the valley between the Fief de Belloy and the Butte de la Justice.

Description of the walk

Return to the free car park on the dirt area at Carrefour de Luynes, on the edge of the D27.

(S/E) With your back to the D27, turn left and head north to reach Carrefour Élisabeth.

(1) Take Route aux Cerfs on the left and continue to the junction with the GR®1: white and red markings.

(2) Turn right and follow this road, crossing Route Robert Joly and then Route du Grand Veneur before arriving at the entrance to Moûtiers, south of Fief de Belloy.

(3) Leave the GR®1 and take the path on the right that joins Route des Moûtiers.

(4) Leave this road immediately by taking the only path on the right that heads south.

(5) Continue to the right and south towards the Butte de la Justice, at the foot of which you will join a PR®: yellow markings.

(6) Continue in the same direction to Rochefort-en-Yvelines via this PR®. Cross over the D988 and take Chemin de la Garenne to the D989. Turn right onto Rue Guy le Rouge.

(7) Leave the road on your left, which you will take on the way back, and continue straight on Rue Guy le Rouge until you reach a three-way junction.

(8) Take Rue de la Pie on the left, then at the end, climb the stairs on the left to reach the church and cemetery where famous people are buried and from where there is a beautiful view.

(9) Then go back down part of the stairs to the first path on the left, called Ruelle aux Brebis. At the end of this path, take Rue des Halles on the left, then immediately right onto Rue Pierre de Bernis. Go around the roundabout on the left and continue straight ahead on Rue Guy le Rouge, which you follow until Rue Raymond Loewy.

(10) Turn left onto this street, then take the first right, following the PR® via Rue de la Butte du Moulin à Vent, then Chemin des Échelettes until you reach the junction with the D149 (Route des Moulins de la Remarde).

(11) Turn left onto Chemin des Moulins de la Remarde, following the GR®655 West. At the junction with Chemin de la Forge on the left, continue straight ahead towards the east, taking Route de Reculet. When you reach Longvilliers Town Hall, continue straight ahead, passing the cemetery on your left. Continue along Route de la Bâte until you reach the wash house at the junction with Rue du Lavoir.

(13) Turn right and follow this road to La Cense: stud farm.

(14) Turn left at a 90° angle to follow the forest path that leads back to Route de la Bâte. Follow it to the right and join Rue Guy Lerouge.

(7) Take this street on the right, then turn into the first street on the left, following the PR® on Chemin de la Garenne. Cross back over the D988 and you will find the junction at the foot of Butte de la Justice.

(6) Turn left, following the PR®.

(15) Leave it temporarily to follow the shortcut straight ahead, which rejoins it further on. Continue straight ahead to a star-shaped crossroads where several paths meet.

(16) Leave the PR®, which heads north, and take the second path on the left, heading south. At the next crossroads, keep to the right and continue for a little over 100 metres.

There is a bakery in town (check opening hours).

You can also do just the Bois de Rochefort circular route starting from the Forêt de Rochefort-en-Yvelines car park on the D27, passing through points (1) to (6) then (15) to (16) via the PR® and ending at points (17) to (1) before descending the path on the left towards (S/E).

You can also just do the circular route around the village, starting from Route de la Bâte, near (7), where you can park. Then follow the route (7) to (14) and then (7).

Worth a visit

The history of the medieval village of Rochefort-en-Yvelines dates back to prehistoric times. Gallic oppida and castles subsequently succeeded one another on its promontory.

Places to visit:
- The Church of Saint-Gilles and the Assumption: a former feudal chapel offering magnificent views. The richly decorated "Chapel of the Princes" of Rohan Rochefort served as the family's funeral chapel until 1793. The adjacent cemetery is also worth a visit.
- The Château de Guy le Rouge, built in the 11th century, is unfortunately now just a ruin that is difficult to access.
- Château Porgès, visible from afar, was built in the early 20th century by the architect Mewes for the diamond merchant Jules Porgès. The building was inspired by the Hôtel de Salm in Paris, now the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur. Today it houses a golf course and hosts corporate seminars.
- Beautiful double wash house (1825) and a drinking trough with paved access. After leaving the church, take Rue Guy Le Rouge to the junction with La Rabette on the right.
- The wash house on the Remarde south of Longvilliers.
- The Haras de la Cense stud farm, which develops the method of ethological horsemanship, is located on the site of a fortified seigneurial residence, remodelled over time, which notably housed Henri IV and Gabriel d'Estrées.
