The Hochburg via the Cols d'Hundsruck, Schirm and Rocher du Poilu

From the car park at Sentheim church, a pleasant, undulating hike passes through Spannplatz between Bourbach-le-Bas and Rammerstatt, climbing towards the Col d'Hundsruck via the Hochburg shelter, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the Swiss Jura and the Bernese Alps in good weather. Then descend towards Bourbach-le-Haut, passing through the Col du Schirm and climbing up to the Rocher du Poilu to enjoy the magnificent view despite the somewhat overgrown forest, before returning to Sentheim via the Chapelle des Mineurs and part of the Geological Trail and Hasenwald.

Description of the walk

Car park in front of Sentheim church. Space for one or two cars on the right just before the bridge over the Doller.

(S/E) Cross the Grande Rue at the pedestrian crossing and take the Rue de l'Église opposite, then the Rue Kattenbach. Turn right towards the bridge over the Doller. Cross the bridge and you will reach the first crossroads nearby.

(1) Turn right towards Chemin de Croix, following the yellow ring markings.

(2) Turn left and follow Chemin de Croix. After the statue of the Virgin Mary near the end of the climb, cross the pasture on the left (yellow ring markings) then continue straight ahead at the next crossroads at the edge of the forest and follow the red triangle markings to the junction with the D35.

(3) Take the road on the right and follow it for a few dozen metres, then turn left, keeping to the red triangle markings. Climb up through the forest to the next junction (cross), where you will find the D35 in a bend. Follow it to the right (red rectangle with white stripe markings). Ignore the first path on the left, which descends to Bourbach-le-Bas and the cemetery.

(4) At the next crossroads, take the path on the left: Red Cross markings, which become Blue Cross markings on the ground, and Red Rectangle with White stripe. Continue straight ahead until you reach the junction with the D36 at the entrance to Rammerstatt.

(5) Cross it carefully, take the path opposite and climb up into the forest: marked with a red rectangle crossed out in white. You will reach the junction of two marked paths (Spannplatz).

(6) Continue almost straight ahead on the path towards the Col d'Hundsruck: marked with a yellow triangle. You will reach the Hochburg shelter.

(7) Continue climbing, leaving the shelter on your left.

(8) Turn left, following the yellow triangle markings. When you reach the edge of the forest, head left to the National Monument to the Shock Troops, located about a hundred metres away.

(9) Retrace your steps and descend to the left towards the Col d'Hundsruck.

(10) Before Route Joffre, take the path marked with a red rectangle crossed with white on the left towards Bourbach-le-Haut. Carefully cross the D14B4 twice as you descend towards the village. Return to the tarmac at Rue des Rochelles and turn left. Pass in front of the Foyer Rural, leave Rue des Rochelles and take the path on the right, climbing towards the chapel. You will come out onto the square in front of the town hall.

(11) Turn left onto Route de Bourbach-le-Bas, then immediately take the small staircase on the right, which rejoins the road further on. Continue to the right and, after crossing a stream, go up Rue du Schirm on the right. Pass one street on the left and then two streets on the right, and follow this street, which further on becomes a path. Walk along the Verger Pédagogique and join the D14B4, 200 m before the Col du Schirm. Continue towards the pass.

(12) At the pass, turn left, pass the first forest path on your left and continue for about 100 metres. Take the path on the right, then the Red Triangle marked trail that climbs towards Rocher du Poilu.

(13) Descend to the left down the slope for a few dozen metres and quickly take the path on the left, then the Yellow Triangle marked trail. Be careful of the lack of markings when the trail joins and crosses the forest road due to forestry work that was not properly completed at the time of passage. Join another forest road marked with a Red Rectangle crossed out in White.

(14) Take the track on the right until you reach the hairpin bend.

(15) Turn right, following the same markings. You will come to another forest track; take the left-hand bend.

(16) Turn left onto the path marked with a red rectangle crossed out in white, towards Sentheim.

(17) At the edge of the forest, take an unmarked path on the right through a meadow, and shortly afterwards join the path marked with a yellow circle and yellow triangle. Continue to the right and you will reach the Chapelle des Mineurs chapel.

(18) Immediately after the chapel, turn slightly left, following the yellow ring and yellow triangle markings, and take the discovery trail: there are old mines here.

(19) Turn left at a 90° angle and you will see a clearing with a farmhouse.

(20) Turn left (yellow ring and blue triangle markings) towards Sentheim. Leave the Sentheim geological trail on your right and cross a stream.

(21) Take the track on the right. At the next junction, turn slightly left and follow the fence to the bridge over the Doller, which you crossed on the way there.

(1) Cross it, take the second street on the left (Rue Kattenbach) and continue to Grande Rue and the church, in front of which you will find the car park (S/E).
