Chemin de Mazagran car park, near the nightclub. Yellow markings.
(S/E) With your back to the nightclub, set off along the cycle path, passing under the footbridge. Just before no. 54 (signpost), climb up to the right via the log steps, heading towards Fort de Chaudanne. At the first houses, the path becomes tarmac. Continue straight on along the short track that crosses the small pine grove.
(1) At the road (Chemin des Échenoz de Velotte), at the signpost, turn right onto the path that runs alongside the low wall of the lodge. Views over the lower Doubs valley towards Beure. At the tarmac path, head up to the left, ignoring the path leading down to Velotte at the next signpost, and continue straight on, passing a power station until you reach the Chemin du Fort de Chaudanne.
(2) Head up to the right for about 100 metres, then turn left towards the viewpoint 200 metres away. At the fork marked by the ‘No Entry’ sign, turn right, passing through the gate. You will cross the limestone grasslands along a stony path and arrive at a 180° panorama of the old town and the new town.
(3) Head off to the left, facing the town, along the path that runs alongside the fence, then along the top of a rampart (Take care!). At the end of this, turn sharp right, following the base of the walls. You cross the fort’s moats. At the fork, at the corner of the high wall, turn right towards the esplanade and the second viewpoint over the old town and the superb citadel.
(4) Viewpoint. Head off to the right (facing the town) via the steps leading to the fort entrance and a new viewpoint over the Citadel, overlooked by Fort de Brégille. Walk down another hundred metres to the bench to find a signpost. Head down the path to the left. Shortly after some wooden steps, you’ll come to a fork. Take the path on the right. At the tarmac road, turn right onto the path that winds down the hillside to the river.
(5) Turn right onto the small tarmac road (reserved for pedestrians and cyclists) that runs alongside the river. Don’t miss the opportunity, a hundred metres further on, near a bench, to head down towards the dam for a lovely view of Vauban’s ramparts and the citadel. Continue on to the car park (S/E).
