Car park at Col de Chassenoud. Enjoy the magnificent views of the Alps, from Mont Blanc to Grand Veymont du Vercors on one side, and Pilat on the other.
(S/E) Then take the D28 on the right towards Longes. Pass through the hamlet of Chassenoud and note the free-range pig farm on the right.
(1) At the end of the hamlet, in a left-hand bend, take the path on the right which descends steeply. The view over Longes opens up. At a three-way junction, turn left onto the small tarmac road clearly visible on the left. Continue downhill towards the stream and reach the small road.
(2) Take it to the left as you climb. At the junction with a road on the right marked "voie sans issue" (dead end), stay on the main road on the left which leads to Longes.
(3) At the corner of the streets, a pretty fountain invites you to descend to the right towards the church. Turn right in front of the church and admire the old stone houses. At the cross, turn left. At the second cross, turn right onto the street, which turns into a small path. Descend to the stream.
(4) Once at the bottom, take the unpaved path on the right that climbs up to the hamlet of Malozon. Continue straight ahead on the path that descends into the forest towards another stream. Cross the stream.
(5) At the three-way junction just after, keep to the right-hand path which climbs up alongside the stream and then moves away from it. At the top, you will find yourself in meadows with magnificent views of the Pilat. When you reach the road, take it on the right to reach the junction with the access road to Longes at a place called La Bernadière
(6) Cross carefully from one side to the other. Continue straight ahead uphill. The tarmac road turns into a dirt track which continues to climb towards the forest.
(7) At the crossroads, take the almost flat path on the right at the edge of the forest.
(8) Continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths branching off to the right. On the right, you will see the outdoor pig farm you saw at the start. These pigs are very fortunate not to be confined in cages on metal grids. Return to the car park (S/E).
