Le Colomby de Gex via the Pas de l'Échine

A challenging approach to a summit offering a 360° view of Lake Geneva, the Alps and the Jura.
The Pas de L'Échine, a tricky and steep but very popular passage, provides direct access to the ridge in a beautiful setting.
The best time to visit is in May, when it is still partially snow-covered and you have to squeeze between the snow and the rock face. However, it is strongly advised not to venture onto the nearby slopes, which are very exposed.

Description of the walk

Access: From the centre of Gex, take Rue Léone de Joinville, then Chemin des Galas, pass a small car park and park in the large logging area that follows, the starting point of the Route forestière du Pays de Gex.

(S/E) Follow the forest road, which climbs gently for about 1 km, until you find the path that cuts diagonally across at the Col de Branveau sign.

(1) Take this path to the right and rejoin the road.

(2) Take the Chemin Neuf, which climbs steadily and almost straight (beautiful views of the Creux de l'Envers and the ridges). Further on, you will come to a crossroads of tracks and paths.

(3) At the junction, leave the track and take the Col de Branveau path on the left. Reach the pass after a short stretch that is often wet and muddy. Enjoy the view of Creux de Branveau, where chamois are often seen in spring.

(4) Follow the grassy shoulder on your right (the trail is faint at first but quickly becomes more clearly marked) which extends to the Pas de l'Échine. The trail becomes steeper, with loose stones underfoot, until you reach a sort of funnel: the Pas de L'Échine.

(5) Come out onto a grassy saddle and rejoin theGR®9, which crosses the Jura ridges. Follow this trail through the pastures towards the west to Colomby de Gex, with its distinctive pylon and a memorial stone at the summit in memory of an aviator who crashed there before the war. From here, there is a magnificent view of the Lake Geneva basin and the mountains of the Bernese Alps to the Écrins. To the north, the Jura stretches as far as the eye can see.

(6) Leave theGR® here and begin the descent due east, following the yellow-marked trail (pegs, markings). Be careful in spring, as patches of snow can be slippery.
Be careful in this section as the trail is poorly marked in places. Look for the path that branches off to the left and leads to the Creux de Branveau ridge.

(7) Continue left on a slight descent to reach the Branveau chalet and then the pass of the same name.

(4) From here, take the same route you took on the way up to return to the starting point (S/E).

Very pretty view of Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. Wonderful hike to do in winter (when there is little snow) or in spring/summer. Great family hike.
We did the hike in February in reverse so that we could descend on the few patches of snow left on the (closed) ski slopes, which allowed us to sledge down (a lightweight sledge that doesn't weigh you down on the hike). The teenagers and children really enjoyed this part.

The circular loop at the top of the route is superb!
It was late July and the markers for the descent and the trail were clearly visible. Be careful, there are several of them, but they all seem to converge more or less, so don't worry. I took a different one from the trail, but it brought me back to the right place.
The only downside to this outing is the long and monotonous Chemin Neuf between points 2 and 3.
But overall, it was a beautiful outing with superb views!

Superb hike. I also recommend changing your route for the return trip at the chalet, even if it means adding an extra kilometre. Be careful at certain times of the year... Hike done in winter. It hadn't snowed for a while, but the snow had held up well at higher altitudes and was very solid. The 'road' between the chalet and the mountain pass was covered with a thick layer of very slippery snow. With the very steep gradient, it was dangerous and clearly unless you have special crampons, I don't recommend it in these conditions.

For a Saturday in July, there were a few hikers but nothing excessive. Although the first part along the forest path is a little monotonous, the rest of the route along the Pas de l'Échine offers remarkable views of Lake Geneva, the Col de la Faucille and Mont Blanc, visibility permitting. So it's a very beautiful walk. We came across a real herd of chamois at the Pas de l'Echine (about 15 to 20). We were surprised to see so many because it was already late morning.
The climb up the Pas de l'Echine is quite steep and a little exposed due to the steep slope, but it has been reinforced with wooden logs to hold the ground and stones in place. It is therefore passable, but a little daunting.
For the return journey, the path through the high-altitude meadows is marked with yellow stakes at regular intervals, so there is no risk of getting lost. The GPX route is fairly accurate.
On the way back, which takes you close to the chalet, we saw two more chamois, which were at a good distance but not too shy. They did not run away.
One suggestion: at the chalet, it should be possible to take the path on the right to continue enjoying the view and avoid taking the forest track on the way down (same route as on the way up), which is not very interesting.
In conclusion, a very beautiful walk. Thank you for this route.

Thank you for your feedback. The climb up the new path may seem monotonous, but it offers beautiful views of the Envers hollow with its unique geology (glacial collapse) and may provide an opportunity to encounter wildlife.
Another alternative to the descent is to return to the Branveau pass after passing the chalet, then climb to the summit of Montchanais and descend opposite via the track (Le Jet de la Reine) to rejoin the tarmac forest road.
When this track makes a sharp right turn, you can cut straight across through a forest corridor (this is a little more adventurous but shorter).

Best regards

A magnificent hike, without much interest in the first part along Mont Chanais. It becomes pleasant at the pass (where the Branveau chalet is located) and the view is magnificent over the Pas de l'Échine with breathtaking scenery. For the descent, I recommend turning right at the chalet to avoid going back down the same monotonous path.
Hike completed in 4 hours and 5 minutes with a break in sunny weather.
