The Col du Fer from Marlens

If you enjoy elevation changes, steep slopes, forests, the sound of flowing water and the somewhat wild side of nature, then this hike is for you. Located in the southernmost part of the Aravis mountain range, this route no longer poses any orientation problems, as it has recently been marked out. There are no particular technical difficulties, but some sections along the cliffs will require your full attention.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the church in the commune of Marlens (74210).

(S/E) From the church car park, follow Rue Saint-François (signposted towards Rocher de Marlens) and, at the end of the street, turn right. Continue along the road until you reach the bridge, a crossroads marked by a wayside shrine.

(1) Turn left and continue towards Rocher de Marlens for 50 metres. Then turn right onto the path that runs alongside the stream and the edge of the forest. Ford the stream twice and you will reach a crossroads of paths at the edge of the woods at a place called Sommet de la Fin.

(2) Take the path on the right to enter the woods, continue towards Col du Fer, following the markings to this location. About thirty metres after the sign indicating the fork towards Rocher de Marlens, be careful as the path branches off to the right but is not very visible. Continue to Bavay d'en Haut.

(3) Walk past the buildings and continue to the right. From here, the slope is steep in many places all the way to Grange des Rieux.

(4) Continue up the winding path to Chalets de l'Arpeyron.

(5) Take the path on the right to climb up to Col du Fer.

(6) Turn back towards the Chalets de l'Arpeyron.

(5) Turn right downhill and follow a long stretch to reach a path at a place called Communal de Cons.

(7) Take the path on the left and continue downhill, which is quite steep in places, until you reach the hamlet of Ville de Rosset.

(8) Turn left and take the path, continuing downhill.

(9) At the fork, continue straight ahead and arrive at Bavay d'en Haut, which you passed on the way there.

(3) Take the path on the right, in the opposite direction to the outward journey, and head for the crossroads at the edge of the woods, at Sommet de la Fin.

(2) Keep right on the path to reach the village of Marlens.

(10) Cross the village to return to the church car park (S/E).
