The Col du Dialtrepoix from Senones Abbey

This varied and fairly easy hike starts in front of Senones Abbey and climbs to the Quatre-Bancs crossroads and then the Col du Dialtrepoix in a fairly wild environment. On the way back, you descend gently along a forest road that offers wide views of the valley at times.

Description of the walk

Park on Place Clemenceau, in the historic centre of Senones, a small town located on the D 424 in the Rabodeau valley.

(S/E) Take Rue Constant Verlot towards the D 424 and turn right into the narrow street between the town hall and the newsagent's.
This narrow lane runs alongside the Rabodeau, which is located below on the left.

(1) Intersection with Rue du Château. On the right is the large Place Charles Thumann with the second Château des Princes de Salm (renovated). Turn left and cross the narrow bridge over the Rabodeau.
At the intersection with the D 424 departmental road, cross the road and follow Rue Charles Claudel opposite towards La Louvière, a healthcare and rehabilitation centre.

Continue along Rue Charles Claudel, turning left and continuing straight ahead on the tarmac path that runs alongside La Louvière, located on the left.
Continue along the dirt track that extends to the right and climbs uphill.

(2) At the top of this road, turn left at City Stade. Continue along the road for 150 metres until you reach Chalet du Clos Malpré on your right.

(3) Turn right between the chalet and the car park and climb up to the Red Triangle marked trail. Continue uphill for 1 km on this trail until you reach the Quatre-Bancs crossroads.

(4) Pass to the right of the picnic shelter and continue along the wide forest path that branches off to the right. Marked with a red triangle and green rectangle.
Arrival at Le Fourneau, where there is a bench and a soldier's grave.
Continue to the right, following the green rectangle markings forthe GR® 533. Stay on this path until you reach the Col du Dialtrepoix (but be careful not to miss the trail that leaves this path at one point and descends to the right, as the markings are rather discreet).

(5) Col du Dialtrepoix. For the return journey, take the forest road (RF) which descends immediately to the right. The road is fairly stony with old cobblestones here and there. After a while, enjoy a beautiful view of the valley.

(6) Carrefour de la Loge des Gardes with its shelter and fountain on the right.
Continue down the middle road that leads to Senones. This tarmac road is in fairly poor condition and mostly shaded. It is dotted with blockhouses and springs on the right.

Arrival at the heights of Senones. The track overlooks the La Combe therapeutic establishment. Continue along this same road to arrive back at Clos Malpré.

(3) Continue along the road that descends to the left towards Senones.

(7) After 200 m, leave the road (which curves to the right) and enter the cul-de-sac that descends to the left (rue de l'Auviot).
This will take you to Rue de la République. Turn right, then take the first left (Rue Abel Ferry).

(8) Cross the Rabodeau and the D 424 again. War memorial and Abbey Park. Continue left, after the park (or in the park), to arrive at Place Dom Calmet in front of the abbey, then Place Clemenceau (S/E).

Notes

This short hike is not particularly difficult, but some sections can sometimes be wet.
Otherwise, the elevation gain is slightly overestimated in the summary (actually closer to 370m than 415m).

There are three shelters along the route: at Quatre-Bancs, Col du Dialtrepoix and La Loge des Gardes, where there is a recently installed fountain.

Visitor numbers: during the week, it is quite rare to meet other walkers (however, families drive up to Les Quatre-Bancs for picnics at weekends when the weather is good).

On Place Clemenceau, in the centre of Senones, there is a bakery, a tea room, two chemists, a tobacconist, a newsagent, a restaurant, a caterer, a cash machine and a tourist office.

Worth a visit

Senones is a small town with a rich historical past: a former independent principality, scarred by two world wars, but also devastated by the crisis in the textile industry that used to sustain the entire valley.

Today, the town is looking to the future. It has definite tourist potential with an extremely varied heritage: natural, princely, religious, industrial and historical.

There is a tourist office on Place Dom Calmet in the centre of Senones.

A lovely, quiet walk. Two minor drawbacks: the signpost is a bit hidden in one spot, and we missed the path that branches off to the right (we carried on along the forest track – watch out!) and there’s a very steep descent at the end of the walk. Otherwise, a lovely walk through the forest with some beautiful views

It is always possible to pass above the shooting range by following the yellow and red GR markings. The castle ruins are at the second intersection and are signposted (point 5). This is a beautiful viewpoint, the most beautiful of the hike. Otherwise, the route is well described and signposted and is very pretty. Be careful at a technical section between points 5 and 6, where there is a kind of natural dolmen. Keep going straight ahead; the mark is not very visible on a rock and we took a wrong turn. The route can be completed at a leisurely pace in three hours, as the return journey is quick.

The route is advertised as taking 4 hours and 15 minutes, but I completed it in 3 hours and 15 minutes. It's a pleasant route to do again in summer as most of it is in the woods.

A pleasant hike in the forest, on trails and forest paths, not difficult. Nature has shaped the forest with huge rocks and dead trees, worthy of a film. Following the red triangle trail can sometimes be a bit of a gamble, but ultimately that's part of the fun of hiking. It takes about 2½ hours, which I think is nice for a late afternoon in summer.

Hello,
We wanted to do this route on Friday, 22 April 2022, taking advantage of a beautiful spring day. At the start, we couldn't resist going to Roche Mère Henry, where we could admire the Rabodeau Valley and the town of Senones. Unfortunately, about two kilometres from the Dialtrepoix Pass, loggers had been at work and numerous tree trunks prevented us from continuing on our way. We had to turn back. There was no noise to signal their presence and no sign warning of this "mikado" that was impassable for some. When it's not hunters, it's loggers who spoil our outings. We weren't able to complete the hike as planned, which was a shame.
Thanks to the person who suggested it and to Visorando.

The signposting of the trail (GR533) to the Dialtrepoix Pass is very discreet. There were 14 of us and no one saw it, so we had to go off-trail for a bit to get back on the right path.
Apart from that, everything is very well described. A superb hike, to which we added a return trip to Roche Mère Henry, with its superb view of the Rabodeau valley.
