Description of the walk

Park in the Pointe de l'Aiguille car park on the edge of the D6098 Route de la Corniche de l'Estérel.

(S/E) Turn right as you leave the car park and follow the pavement along the D6098. Cross the road with great care and turn left into Rue Abel Ballif, which forms part of the GR®653A. Stay on the GR® until you reach the junction at the Parc Départemental de la Pointe de l'Aiguille.

(1) Leave the GR® here and turn right onto the yellow-marked path leading into the park. After a few hairpin bends and an easy climb, you’ll reach a wide track; take this to the left to reach marker 519. Leave the track by turning right onto the ascending path and head for the Théoule water tower.

(2) Take the DFCI track to the left and continue on level ground until you reach the junction at a hairpin bend with the Saoumes track.

(3) Turn left at almost 180°, descend slightly and reach the Notre-Dame d'Afrique Memorial.

(4) Continue straight ahead up a short climb, now following the GR®653A, turn right at a 90° angle and continue along this track until you reach a path junction at marker 510.

(5) Leave the track here and continue downhill on the GR® (this is simply a shortcut off the track) and, at the bottom of this descent, reach the Col de Théoule.

(6) Begin the return journey by taking the track to the right to reach the junction at marker 510.

(5) Follow the route of the outward journey in the opposite direction until you reach the junction at the Notre-Dame d’Afrique Memorial.

(4) Keep to the right on the GR®, following the red and white markings, and continue along the Allée des Eucalyptus until you reach a flight of steps.

(7) Take the steps to the right, join Rue Abel Ballif, turn left, then walk along the pavement of Boulevard de la Corniche d'Or (the D6098) to return to the Pointe de l'Aiguille car park (S/E).

Thank you for that information, but could you tell me a bit more about the diversion you mentioned? It must be very recent, as the previous comments make no mention whatsoever of any difficulties with the route.

The outward route includes a turn-off from the main track that is very difficult to spot and isn’t signposted. So I did the hike ‘backwards’, with the section between the track and Notre-Dame d’Afrique being quite a challenge.

Several points to mention about this hike.
- as usual, the distance is incorrect. I don't know why, whether it's a GPS issue, the algorithm that calculates the distance, or something else. It was listed as 7.41 km, but I ended up at 7.99 km.
- regarding the elevation gain/loss, I'm at 285 metres up and 284 metres down, about 40 metres more than advertised.
- the hike is described as easy; the description mentions an easy climb before the water tower, but that depends on who you ask. I love trail running. I really enjoy climbs with rocks, significant elevation changes, etc. But to say it's easy, there's still a bit of a "walk" involved. I was thinking of doing the hike with the children. The path is quite steep, not very wide and winding. It's not easy for them. Perhaps a special mention for children should be added. When you read "easy", you don't expect this level of difficulty. I'm nitpicking, it's just for future parents who bring children/young teenagers.
- there is also another descent, a shortcut where you leave the trail, which is not necessarily obvious to everyone. Children, be careful not to run.

Let's end on a positive note.
- it's always a pleasure to pass by Notre Dame d'Afrique.
- the view of the Col de Théoule is very pleasant.
- the trail/trial aspect of the hike at the beginning, with the steep, narrow switchbacks, is exciting.
- the return trip, after Notre Dame d'Afrique, is relaxing, with no particular difficulties.
