The Pont Moutonnier route

Starting from Puech Sigal, a beautiful circular walk through the remote villages of the Cévennes in the Gard region, to the Col de l’Asclier and its sheep bridge.

By adding an hour and a half to the walking time, the start (and finish) can be at Notre-Dame-de-la-Rouvière.

Description of the walk

At Notre-Dame-de-la-Rouvière, turn immediately left onto the Route du Puech Sigal, then right twice. A small car park is available at the start of the route, 100 m before the hamlet of Puech Sigal (a signpost marks the start of the Pont Moutonnier trail).

(S/E) Walk up to the hamlet until you reach a crossroads.

(1) Turn right, then left onto the path as you leave the hamlet. The path climbs slightly before descending towards Valnières (Randavel). A very stony path requiring suitable equipment (walking poles and sturdy footwear).

(2) Cut through the hamlet of Lautal, then turn right to reach Randavel (Valnières) on the D152b.

(3) Turn left towards Rieusset, then turn left again at the village exit to reach Mas Rieusset.

(4) On leaving the hamlet, take the path that climbs to the left to cut across the bend in the road. Return to the road and continue to Corbière.

(5) Take the path climbing up to the left towards Pont Moutonnier. Climb for about 3 km, after which you will find the picnic area on the right, slightly below, about a hundred metres from the Col de l'Asclier.

(6) The picnic area offers a stunning view of the valley. Then head back towards the pass.

(7) Be sure to pay your respects to the statue of the shepherd and take theGR®67, just to the left, before Pont Moutonnier, along a ridge path leading to the Col de L'homme Mort (originally known as the Col de l'Orme Mort).

(8) At the pass, leave theGR® 67 and head down to the left, towards Puech Sigal. Pass by the Jasses de Rieusset and continue to the Quatre Jasses (sheepfold, ruined houses).

(9) Continue along the path opposite. Descend to a wide track coming from the right and continue straight on to the hamlet of Puech Sigal.

(1) Turn right to return to the car park, 100 m further down (S/E).

A lovely route offering beautiful views of the Cévennes mountains.
Some parts are wooded, others more open but very pleasant. There are some lovely hamlets to discover.
Be careful, the section between 5 and 6 is steep and takes 50 minutes to climb
The ridge path that follows is well worth the effort.
The wooded descent is gentle, allowing you to recover.

A lovely walk with stunning views. Done on 14 April 2024 in 28-degree heat! Be warned, the climb must be very tough in summer! At the picnic tables, you tend to head up the slope, but the path is to the right before the tables. Another picnic spot in the shade is available after the Moutonnier bridge, before the Col de l’Homme Mort, with a lovely view of the Lozère.

A snow-covered route from point 4 to point 9 this January! Magnificent views over the ridge, then we turn off and get a view of Mont Ventoux with the Pre-Alps in the distance. A breathtaking trail as soon as you gain a bit of height, and very pleasant through the village and the forest. Took just under 5 hours, at a leisurely pace, including a lunch break. A good climb to reach the picnic spot – it warms you up. Warning! The path was covered in snow so it was difficult to follow; luckily we had the app with GPS and a few footprints to help us find our way. Don’t venture out there without GPS when it’s snowed.
